The tough part is that this dog has very very bad separation anxiety. He was crated twice but he managed to break out of his crate (literally busting open the steel crate and bending it so he could squeeze out). And made a huge mess in his foster dad's apartment. He also cut up his nose in the process and got blood everywhere. It really is not safe to crate him in steel crates. I have had him at my house the past week and have let him have the run of the place. I am certain he spends a good deal of the day whining/barking and the rest cruising for food. He knows how to open doors (gets on his hind legs and uses his paws!) and has gotten into the closet for a feast of dog food and milkbones. He has had accidents every time he has been left alone (my rug is a goner). He will be going to a boarding facility until he is adopted on Tuesday, after he is neutered. But in the meantime what he heck can I do to chill this dog out???? I have left toys, bones, kongs etc. and he will not touch them once you are gone (funny that he eats whatever he can find, but what you leave him isnt good enough...) Suggestions welcome! |

We left the radio on for olie when he was younger,
We made sure it was a mainly talking station, |
Ewww, that is not good...
Hopefully this is related to his life changing event. Is he being adopted on Tuesday, or neutered on Tuesday? |
He is being neutered on Saturday and then boarded at a dog daycare on Tuesday until we can find him a permanent home. |
killing myself that you do not use the D word. Our little girl is sensitive as well and pouts if she is called that |
I have issues with my sheepie in cages as well with the separation anxiety. I haven't really been able to cage her - she gets hysterical and shakes and urinates all over herself out of fear/anxiety. I have no advice as how to deal with the cage because I was never successful with that. Luckily I can leave her out now with very minimal problems.
I know you said you've tried the kongs, but something I've tried that works enough to distract her so that we can get out the door is to provide a kong filled with layers of peanut butter, treats and canned cheese (although some don't feed their dogs this junk, but it works so i'll take it!). I layer it with 2-4 layers and then pop it in the freezer overnight. Each new layer is an incentive to keep licking! Just before I leave I put a dab of fresh PB to get her started and give it to her in a room out of view of the door, then it keeps her busy for up to an hour rather than the 5 minutes it would take if not frozen. By the time she's done, she's forgotten that we left without her and she is usually sleeping peacefully in a clean house when we return. |
