Update on my Shingles experience after one year

This is the first anniversary of my journey with Shingles. A year ago this week it all began. I went for my check up yesterday and the doctor told me that my Shingle outbreak is so far out of the norm it could take up to three years to be back to normal....but he doesn't know for sure. He said shingles are different for each person. I would have been depressed with this news if I had not already been told by one of the members here that his wife had the damage from shingles for three years. The day he told me that I was very depressed...so dr's news did not hit me as hard. What has kept me going with a positive attitude is that I would be over this in a month, then by a year....now who knows. I will stay positive though. The Dr said there is nothing we can do to hurry recovery along.

The right side of my upper lip did come back a couple of weeks ago and just around Christmas my gum on my right side the feeling came back, so itis just a matter of time. So now my tongue, right side of lower lip, jaw, eye, cheek. ear are affected. It was a quick "roll down the hill" losing feeling and just a slower "climb up the hill" to regain the feeling.

side note: Asia was just sitting on a chair at the table in the Florida room, like a person.....I heard her Dad does that all the time. What a goof ball.

I can see that my face is "falling" ever so slightly on my right side from the lack of muscle control. My Dr could see it too. (my hubby says he can't tell  )

My biggest complaint, and those of you on pain meds I know go through this all the time....is my pain meds are Federally regulated so can only be dispensed at certain times. My Dr was out of the office because of a death in the family and his partner who was covering for him, would not write my perscription for me...so I went 5 days without my pain meds. I had to use "over the counter" meds which DID NOT do the job. I don't call the dr's office for a perscription before I am almost out because I know how regulated they are. My use changes regularly because if the nerve isn't "waking up" I use less and when it is "waking up" I have to use more. Anyway, he told me to call a week before I think I'll need my perscription and hopefully I won't have anymore problems. I know I could have gone to the Emergency Room, but that would have cost, at least $700 and a whole day of sitting around since our Seniors use it as their Dr offices. So back to the dr's in three months (can you believe three months is July?)

Anyway, onward and upward....it is only uphill from here.

Thank you to everyone who has kept in touch with me regarding my illness.

Good Luck!! I hope you see rapid improvement from here on out.
:ghug: :ghug:

Big hugs to you. Wishing you a steady recovery.

I had shingles years ago (mild case), and my heart goes
out to you with managing the pain and discomfort.
Take it one day at a time, and know we are here to support you!

Sending prayers your way for a total healing.
oh gosh shingles is awful. My mum had it years ago, and I remember her curled up on the chair holding her face, and my sister had it years ago, round her middle. She had 3 weeks off work with it, but it was nice in a way as she had a dog called Honey, and she had been ill, so for 3 weeks they lounged about together and pottered round the garden, a week or so later Honey was pts.
But I have never heard of shingles that lasts that long, so you are an incredibly brave person to be coping with it. hugs to you. xx
Helen, at least you're on the upside of it, even though it's slow going. Hopefully there will be a day when it all starts improving faster and you'll be all better!
Your positive attitude will help you more than anything at this point. You are getting better, it's just taking longer than we'd like. Hugs to you, Helen, and I wish you a speedier recovery than you've had so far.

Exactly....

I've never heard of such a severe case... a former co worker had/has it, and was dealing well with his recovery last I heard. I only knew how serious it "could" be because of you telling us about it, so I held back my usual mean suck it up buddy comments  (he is a former nhl star)

Sending positive thoughts and wishes....you are such a nice and kind person I hope you get over this fast
:D Best wishes and hugs! I'm a member of the shingles survivor group as well! :ghug:
I had shingles once and it was not near the case you had. I had a patient one time that had it like you and it took two years to recover with pain meds etc. You have come this far and look wonderful so hang in there with your sheepie friends here and maybe you will be totally well soon. Hugs to you.........
Oh I'm so sorry you have been feeling icky. Stay positive- if you feel like you can't just come on here & we will pick you up :ghug:

Here's to getting better!
Sheepie hugs Helen been a long road so far and things can only be on the uphill track from now on.

I had no idea how bad shingles can be and you are a strong and lovely person and I know you will eventually be feeling 100% even if it does take time, hang in their girl :ghug:
You have a positive attitude Helen, that will take you far.
I do hope the healing time is much less than what the Dr said.
:ghug:
You are right, everyone is different. I am glad you are improving. I can not imagine your pain. I had a little three inch square once on my arm. I hurt so bad, and looked terrible. I told one idot that keeped asking me about it, it hurt to have it covered, that it was a reaction to radiation exposure. You should have seen his face. I don't think knew if he should believe me.
Helen,

your attitude is amazing....you are doing so well...keep up the good spirits..

its been a tough year....one that is now in the past...

xo
Hi Helen,

You've been dealing with so much and yet your strong spirit and positive attitude shins through your post. You are a role model of inspiration, Helen.
I wish I could say something or do something that would make that horrible pain go away. I can only understand how frustrating this whole ordeal must be for you. Sending positive vibes your way.

I'm glad you are on the upswing! We're all here for you!

Marianne
