my wife never grew up with a dog.. at first she spent a lot of time saying "no" and backing away from him... i made no attempt to correct her (except to mention that she was saying "no" a lot). last night she paid tulo the ultimate compliment (?) .."he is like a person". although she and i treat tulo differently, he loves us both. ps... he IS like a person... when i see other dogs, i see dogs... when i see tulo, i see a person.... i cant remember if i felt this way about my other dogs... i think not. tulo has been great from the start but gets better every day. |

Its so odd that you see Tulo as a person. I have the same feeling about Phoebe. I grew up with dogs and love them. But Phoebe is the first one who I see as a person. |
What do you mean they SEEM like a person? They are people, they have their own personalities, quirks, and intelligence. They will try to control you house.......and will if you let them......bad idea. I hope your wife gains understanding that she is a leader and must present herself as the boss.
This from someone who is awakend at first light by a sheepdog who escorts the other dogs outside, turns around and jumps on the bed and goes back to sleep, preferring I too remain off the bed. |
Having a sheepie in your life will change you. You can't help yourself. (says the woman with a sheepie girl's head in her lap as she types ) |
When I was growing up we always had dogs around, but never sheepdpgs. My mother never liked any of the dogs, she just would not have anything to do with them.
My wife and I got our first sheepdog shortly after we married. My mother stayed with us for a short time after we moved to West Virginia and found that our sheepdog stayed by her side whenever we were away from the house. From that point on she loved all our sheepdogs. In her later years my mother was confined to a wheelchair. When "gramma" arrived our last sheepdog would go to the door crying. I don't know whether it was due to mom being confined to a wheelchair or not, but Riley became especially affectionate towards her. Three years after she passed away I asked him if he remembered "gramma". He jumped up off the floor and ran to the door crying as he always did when we spoke her name. Three days later he was gone. Sheepdogs truly are one of God's gifts! |
At the risk of being chewed out I will say this. I am not a dog person, but I love my sheepies. They are the only dogs I have ever really wanted around me...maybe it is because they act so human most of the time. I am hooked and am owned by the 5th and 6th sheepies of my life. |
i will never forget the first time i met tulo.
they had him separated at the kennel awaiting my arrival. after spending about 30 minutes with him, they put him back with the other dogs.... all the dogs stood at the fence whining at us... but tulo was looking straight into my eyes... it was almost eerie. |
We've had sheepdogs in our house for 32 years. You're in for an unforgettable experience !! |
And it does not matter how bad of a day you have... they will ALWAYS make you laugh. |
We love being around Bing because he is SOOOOO expressionate, especially with his eyes. I love this "people personality" trait! |
I have to say, I feel sorry for your wife. She is missing out on a great relationship. My dh never had dogs growing up and we are now living in the house his dad built and he grew up in. As he lays in bed or on the couch covered in sheepies(or our other dogs at the bridge) his favorite saying is"I was never a dog person and there have never been dogs in this house". I always tell him I feel sorry for him and what he was deprived of.
It sounds like things are going great with Tulo but be careful. He will take over the house if you're not. |
If a sheepie does not win her over in a doggie world, I do not think any dog would. They are just to darn cute. Even when they get in trouble they are still wonderful no wonder they rule the house. |
Speaking of expressions and the "human-like" qualities....Matisse tilts his head and grumbles back to you when you ask him questions. He is capable of having conversations....
We're still learning Cozette's behavior at the moment but she sure does love standing on two legs!!! I wish you the best with Tulo!!!! You WILL learn something new everyday.... |
The sheepdog I just lost had a unique way of answering me. I would ask him a question such as "Do you want to go to work?" (I took him to work with me every day) or "Do you want to go home?" If his answer was 'yes' he gave a quick lick to the end of his nose. It was distinctly different than a 'yum this is good' lick. If he wasn't interested there was no nose lick.
Sheepdogs are very unique in that they have a lot of good human traits without any of the bad human traits. |
i think the folks who feel sorry for my wife misunderstood my post (or i, theirs). she IS won over... big time.
anyway... i have a question.. when tulo sees a rabbit, bird, or even his friend the poodle, he sneaks up on them cat like before he starts to run after them... i call it stalking... is this typical for a sheepie? |
The pup I just lost used to sneak all the time. In fact, it was a game he loved to play with me. We would start perhaps 100 yards apart and sneak towards each other one cautious step at a time. It might take 10 minutes to cover the distance. When we were about ten feet apart he would suddenly bolt towards me which was followed by loads of lovin'. There were times when he could just drive me nuts, such as when we were leaving work and I was in a rush to get somewhere. If he decided to play the sneak game, we were playing the sneak game, rush or no rush. They're so much fun !! |
that's funny... i can picture it...these dogs have strange minds...
btw... i have added some pictures of tulo... some might be duplicates..i am new at this. Just click on my camera! |
Cute pics!
What a comfy seat your wife makes! |
What a handsome boy...and I agree, your wife looks like Tulo is a lapful! |
What a cutie Tulo is! |
Tulo is very handsome. Are you planning on shearing on a regular basis? Our sheepdogs spend a lot of time in the woods and fields walking with us so burrs were a huge problem. We finally gave in to shearing and found it made our guys very easy to take care of. We shear in the spring before it gets too hot and again in the fall before it gets cold. My wife likes them sheared, I like them in coat. We both get our way shearing twice a year. If the rest of the world ever figures out just how much fun these dogs are and how easy they are to care for if sheared, we'd be overrun with them. |
i'm not sure about the shearing. i think we'll prolly do it like you do.
they are so damned good looking under that hair! he enjoys lying on the deck in the afternoon with the cool breezes blowing so i dont think he will like the heat of long hair in the summer. |
