Here is the story: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loca ... 8147.story The Police claim they didn't have time to wait for AC, and that the cougar was going to attack. I don't buy it. I'm heartsick for this animal. |

What would you rather have the police do? |
I'd rather have seen him tranquilized...than killed. |
Cops don't carry tranquilizers and animal control is unreliable. The general protocols for wild or dangerous animals is to protect the public at all costs and the animal is secondary. You just can't take that kind of a chance in a residential area.
I feel bad that urban spraul is probably to blame for the cougar getting into that situation but given the situation, it's pretty much us versus them at that moment. |
Mandy's right, Deb.
Cougars are my favorite big cat and it's painful to see something so beautiful, graceful and powerful in a dead heap, but, hon, if he was in my yard and it was my dogs or the cat...Or somebody's kid. The cops did what they had to do. Just such a shame he ended up there to begin with. Kristine |
I know, and logic tells me it was the right thing to do. But seeing the pictures of him being killed, and dragged all over the street was upsetting to me. I guess I probably would have done the same thing. Its just hard to see. |

THAT'S the part I have a problem with - the media broadcasting images like that to boost their ratings. Totally unnecessary!! The story would have been just as effective without video or gory images. |
The media really pisses me off. About a year and a half ago, we had an incident with an off duty cop beating up a very petite bartender, because she had "cut him off". It was a horrible story, but what made it worse was that the media played the tape of it over and over.....they are still playing it! It was brutal! It was on the morning news, the early evening news, the late news. I'm sure many children and teens saw it. No wonder they are so desensitized to violence. I, personally, still can't look at it. I always turn away. |
Cougars aren't exactly native to Illinois. Any word from whence he came? |
I'm sure animal control would prefer handgun or shotgun to their capture sticks for a cougar! I agree re: the press. A simple picture of the dead animal would be sufficient to tell the story and reinforce in people wild animals do live in the city.....4 legged I mean. These action shots are disgusting. Probably why my finger is always on the remote when watching news.......I just go to another station. |
There was some mention that he may have been someone's illegal, exotic pet. But I don't think they know. They believe he was spotted in Wilmette or Winnetka over the weekend. That a long trek for a big cat. |

They believe he was spotted in Wilmette or Winnetka over the weekend. That a long trek for a big cat. There have been cougar's spotted in two other locations....Wilmette and somewhere else a couple weeks ago. Last I heard they don't know whether it is the same animal or not...so there could be more wandering around. |

I would've liked to seen them go mano-a-mano in a no holds bar wrestle to submission. Their use of gun clearly illustrates that they knew the cougar would win. |

People are nuts if that's true. I wonder how someone can get ahold of an animal like that w/o someone noticing it (shipping it, etc)! |
I want every case of police brutality aired over and over.
Much is expected and must be demanded from those to whom are given great powers. |
There has been eight confirmed cougar sightings in Missouri since 1994. One near my town was hit and killed by a vehicle.
We also had a bobcat wandering the sidewalks of a residential neighborhood in the middle of the day a few years ago. http://www.fultonsun.com/articles/2005/ ... news16.txt If I remember correctly it was also killed by either police or the Conservation Department. They said it unfortunatley had to be done. Once a wild animal becomes so "at home" in a public area and realizes it can easily access food there is a higher probability of it returning and it becomes more of a public safety issue. It is very sad, but I would hate to think of what would happen to small children or pets if these wild cats decided to stick around. |

An animal refuge is one posibility. Some ma and pop circus acts and roadside zoos dump the animals after their usefulness. Thank God these refuge's are available, otherwise they'd have no chance of survival. These refuge's, like dog rescue also operate on donations. I live probably 30 miles from one and I know they've had at least 3 cats escape within the last 10 - 15 years. The most recent was about 2 or 3 years ago. Last I heard it was heading toward Bloomington, IN. The owner is not shy about publicizing their escape, nor is the media, but I've never heard anything about their recoveries. I guess unless it ends tragically its not newsworthy. This guy is licensed to fend for these beautiful beasts, and he does a wonderful job, but........ things happen beyond our control. Once they manage to escape public welfare must come first. Sad as the outcome may be, to top that off, some of the old cats may have few, if any of their teeth left, but they still have their strength and claws. That cat was absolutely beautiful! An innocent creature, just trying to survive in a world along side man, he hasn't a chance. |
