We lost our last girl 2 years ago this month and are currently looking for a breeder. I have contacted Woodsshadow Kennel in Ontario and he has 3 female (3 1/2weeks old) puppies. Does anyone know of this breeder- Mr. Bill Trudgen. Any info would be appreciated. |

There are things you should look for when searching for a reputable breeder.
First and foremost, ask to see health certifications on their breeding dogs. Any reputable breeder will be more than happy to show you these certificates. At a minimum, you should be shown either OVC or OFA certifications for hips, and CERF certificates for the eyes. A breeder who shows their dogs to their Championships is also a plus, even if you do not want a showdog. This shows they are striving to produce the best OES possible, and are putting the money, time and effort into an unbiased opinion as to the quality of their breeding stock. Ask lots of questions! How are the puppies raised and socialized? Are there any health issues in their lines? Can they provide references from families who have their pups? Since you are in Nova Scotia, I realize it is impossible for you to visit different breeders, but this is a good start. And finally, never be in a rush, or purchase the first puppy that is available! Most reputable breeders have waiting lists, and carefully screen each home their new puppy is going to. I have a past pup that I sent to Nova Scotia, and I required a reference from their vet as well as a trainer to make sure my pup would be going to the best home possible. |
Welcome Jill and Barry from a fellow Scotian.
Amber is giving excellent advice, it is very important that you meet the breeder, see the parents and get the guarantees. Reputable breeders are non-existant in the Maritimes. A Sheepie mix (with Beardie) will be coming over from Labrador in the next few weeks and going to a foster home. If you would like some details, pictures and information, please feel free to PM me. Jill and Barry, I saw a pic of the little sweetie coming from Labrador...He is a darling! Looks like a mini-sheepie...!
If it is a puppy you are looking for please look for a breeder who shows their dogs to their championship, or at least does adequate testing on their breeding dogs before they let them produce puppies. Getting a puppy that is healthy and has sound parents is the best gift you can do for yourself. I will send you a PM about the breeder you have mentioned, as they are not far from me. Brenda, you MUST post that picture of the little fellow you are helping! |
