Does Wilbur need a haircut?

Hi guys,

I am kinda going backwards and forwards on this one and not sure what to do best for Wilbur...

It's pretty warm year round here in San Antonio, Tx but right now its starting to tip 80 to 90 every other day.

Wilbur doesnt appear to be affected by the heat but saying that he doesnt venture out so much either... we have a nicely shaded backyard and inside the AC is on day and night since i work from home, he will sit and basque in the sun but comes in when it gets to hot for him, he always has plenty of water and can come and go from the house as he pleases... i take him for walks early morning when its cool, and sometimes late at night when he decides to move around the house at 100mph! LOL

Shauna thinks we should get him shaved saying its too hot for him, but i saw videos of sheepies in australia running around herding sheep with full coats the other day! He very very rarely comes into contact with water other than when im take him to the wash and go?

Your thoughts on getting him shaved or not greatly appreciated! :)

I live in Florida with similar weather as you have there in Texas. I leave my OES Violet in full coat all year round. I also have an AussieShepherd. China who has a full coat. They have a doggy door to go in and out of the a/c as they need, so most of the time during the warmer months they do stay in the house mostly through midday. We also have banana trees and a few differnt types of palm trees in the backyard that they like to lay under. They will usually go outside in the morning and evenings. China will lay right outside in the sun and sometimes will come in with a really hot to the touch coat. They have water left out all the time...in the house. Neither of them seem to be that affected by the long coat.

Good luck with your decision.
I am also in the same boat. We get really hot here but I love Nigel's big, fluffy coat at 10 1/2 months. I have to brush bits almost every day as his puppy coat is starting to mat with the big boy fur. I hear the coat is supposed to insulate...then again mine are indoors with me most of the time too.
MY bad...insulation from the heat is a fallacy...long coats are ok if you keep the dog cool in Summer.
You can also strip the undercoat out to remove the bulk and keep him cooler.
wilbur got shaved yesterday mainly due to matting! But thanks for the advice - pics of our naked wilbur to come soon! 8O
