Clearing "sleep" from eyes

First post, first oes pup!

I've wanted an old english sheepdog for as long as I can remember so we were overjoyed at getting a last-minute phonecall from a rescue in Wales a month ago offering us the gorgeous bundle of oes-fluff that is Dylan.

Grooming, training, eating, everything is going wonderfully well except for one thing. He gets gunk in his eyes overnight and hates having it removed. I'm as gentle as possible but it gets stiff and dries in the corner of his eyes.

Any tips for getting it off as quickly and painlessly as possible?

Welcome!

Hold his snout with one hand and use your fingers on the other hand to gently tug. Try not to scrape the skin with your nail, you really just wanna grap the crusties and pull them from the hair. Watch out for your fingernails and Dylan's eyes!!!

Sometimes the snout-holding hand's fingers are also used to gently pull the skin on the snout near the eye to straighten the hair and make the gunk more accessible.
Ron gave a nice description, I can only add to do it often...
....another addition......

since it IS a labor of love...(yekckcyyyy..eye boogies)...eventually he may begin to enjoy it...when I say.."oh...let me get those eye boogies"...that is their cue to lay their head on my lap and "watch" me as I perform the boogieectomy.....

(Welcome to the forum...and when you have time...we would love to see some pictures...)
Thank you all! I keep my fingernails quite short, partly because of not wanting to hurt him (but mostly because I'm far too busy to spend time keeping them nice!) so I'll keep practising. I did try moistening the area with a cotton wool pad soaked in water but it didn't seem to help any. Ah well, I'm sure it'll get easier :) .

As for pictures, here's one taken in the snow last week, his first ever experience of the white stuff (and boy did he enjoy it!). I'm so glad we have wooden floors not carpets or I'd still be drying them out!

p.s. "boogieectomy"?
OH!!! He is soooo adorable!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting a picture.......

I am in St. Louis...if you are close maybe Dylan and Heart could play????? (I know,,,,I know....what are the chances.....   )

but he really is a cutiepatooti....
I use the small end of a greyhound type comb and just comb them out when they are dry. It helps to keep the hair pulled out of his eyes for less crusties too. He doesn't mind this. Bella's hair is short now so she is easy.
Grosss-out alert!

Dixie loves her "treat" so I have no problems getting it off of her. She sometimes comes over, shoves her headn near my hands and it is NOT for scratches...She wants her snack!

Try it...He just might like it..
Ick!!
Never happening here - I would be ill.....

I find they are easier to remove dry. When wet they are slimy and require more work to get out.
Dry ones come off in one try. :D
Oh Nicole - that is so far beyond disgusting.....
Welcome to the "Bobtail Family" Dylan

We discussed this a couple of weeks ago and that thread is:

Thanks and Cheers

8O  That is so funny... and GROSS!

I use fine tooth flea combs... we hardly ever have flea problems so they're
now the official eye booger combs. I've got two of them and keep them in
easy to access places so I can de-booger my girls daily. :D

And oh my goodness... is Dylan a cutie! :D
Mustache comb works great.
Aw sheepieshake, I'm afraid we're across the pond in the Hampshire Downs (Watership Down is just behind the house) so it would be quite a trek for a doggie play party. What a shame!

Thank you for the extra tips everyone, gross or otherwise  .

Carl, thank you for the link to the earlier thread (can you tell I'm a newbie?) I'll go read it now.
Yeah, mine tolerate me checking for eye goobers because they think they are tasty. I never intended to feed them to the dogs. It just happened before I realized what was going on. Sigh. Frankly, that's the least of the long list of disgusting stories about what my dogs will eat, given the chance, or lick, given even a hint of a chance.

I just use my fingers because it's quick and convenient, and as you might have guessed, I'm not easily grossed out.
Sorry...mine win on disgusting. I have a cat that poops on the garage floor. It's always a race to see who cleans it up...me or the dogs. Thank goodness for Listerine pocket packs. Yuck!!!
Both of mine enjoy eating their eye crusties.
Poppy also enjoys her 'snack' sorry to say  It just kind of happened one day and now I can't get away with not letting her have it - she goes mad for it!! I know its yuccy but she lets me clean them if I reciprocate
What a cute pup! And what a beautiful tail he has! I'm so jealous...
Thank you Cadenza (and what a beautiful name!).

If letting him eat the crusties makes him keener to put up with it then I'm happy. Will go and try that right now...

Whenever I would clear the "sleep" out of Milton's eyes I would always say "Lemme see" and after doing that repeatedly he now knows what "lemme see" means. He sits totally still as I quickly and carefully clean out his eyes.
