Failing sheepdog 101

Okay, so I manage the love, medical, food and other basic needs but mastering the grooming seems to be beyond me!! I really do try, but I don't think Lucy is ever going to keep a full coat. She doesn't seem to mind but I feel like a sheepie owner failure!!

My husband is shaving Lucy down at the moment. I finally gave in. She doesn't necessarily like being brushed and I have to fight with her to hold still....not an easy task when your 9 months pregnant. We adopted Lucy at 14 months and she came to us shaved because she was so matted. We've had her almost a year. I would think that would be enough time to get her adjusted to a grooming routine.....so it must be me. I'm determined to get it right but it looks like it'll be a few months. Poor girl is completely nekkid.

Don't feel bad, her brother got a shavedown too. Unfortunately, his was an accident though because an overzealous groomer decided it "needed to be done." He's just getting some hair back now and fluffing up again but he has yet to hit the point of what you'd call full coat, too!
Don't feel too bad, it happens to everyone. :D
Don't feel too bad. It takes a lot of time to brush an OES. If Lucy doesn't like to be brushed she'll be much happier with a short coat.
Don't feel bad. You are 9 months pregnant. That alone is more than most people can handle.
There is nothing wrong with shaving them. My hair is long at the moment and I wouldnt mind that cutting short... and bless you cant keep her brushed being pregnant...
Once she's shaved it will be much easier to get her used to the routine, anyway. After her hair begins to get long enough to groom again and you're a little recovered  from everything else you can start short and sweet grooming sessions that eventually just become a habit to her. As the hair grows the grooming sessions will naturally become a little longer and before you know it she'll be in full coat and be beautifully groomed! At least, in a perfect life . . . But don't feel bad at all!
ButtersStotch, you posted that a groomer made a grooming decision as big as shaving the entire dog... I would be livid if someone else made such a decision about my dog!!
We lost too.

Mulligan will be getting shaved soon too. :(
Duchess will be getting shaved also, she is 18 months and I hate to have to have it done but just didn't have time or energy in the last 4 months to keep the grooming up and now she has BAD mats
LeAnne had Clay done when she was pregnant too. I even bathed him for her too one time, as she couldn't manuever that well.

It's hair, it will grow back! :D :D
Committment to long coat is great! Then some guys have harder coats to maintain......those softer coats are the pits. Most of us fail at some point...some of us far more often. I prefer shorter coats for mine in summer so they can play in the water and mud.........groan.

Jack is still half done.......what a sight! But it's turned cold and I can't take him down until warmer weather is here to stay.
Awwww... there's nothing to feel bad about! (says the lady with 4 short-haired-sheepies  )

I agree. :D Take advantage of this naked-time and go through the motions of grooming nightly. Get some small tasty treats and keep the sessions short... they'll gradually get longer as her hair grows. Reward her for good behavior as you play-groom her. You'll work her into a routine she may come to look forward to.

So don't feel bad... it's hair that will grow back in no time at all.

He's my mom's dog and she was really upset. I do my own grooming due to my distrust of groomers-- well, that and I really don't mind doing it now that I mostly know what I'm doing . Most groomers complain too much and that's really what I don't like. They're just dying to shave any OES they see. I think it's a condition requiring medication.
Well, the good news about the shavedown is Lucy has suddenly taken to cuddling in bed with me at night! :hearts: I don't think she's quite adjusted to her change in temperature!
I thought I was doing a pretty good job but my shoulder has been bothering me so I got this really good mobile groomer to come to the house just to bath and brush, she was here 4 hours and said he was full of matts  I was so embaressed because she groomed him once for me and said he was a breeze I also had her do a puppy cut once. Sooo 4 hours later and $150 He looks wonderful. I really need my "who wants to groom session" He may have to have a puppy cut again in the future but he looke great now. Too bad I am to broke to take him anywhere!!!!
