I bought a Simplicity pattern, #7014, to make a new "Beasley's Couch" type bed for Nelson. It has several other variations as well. Haven't started on it yet but since his bed is wearing thin, I'll have to do something soon.
Scroll down to #7014 and click on the photo. There are four different versions of beds. http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?all ... startrow=1 |
I cheated. I bought some clearance patio lounge cushions last fall. I cut them into appropriate sized pieces and sewed up the side I cut. Super easy, super cheap.
And when naughty Maggie chews and defluffs them too bad, I just throw it and get out another section! |
Nita...is that the big one on the bottom? I wish I could see the pattern. Does it have a zipper? I haven't put a zipper in anything since Jr. High school. If I remember right it wasn't my best job.
What do you stuff the bed with? I am pretty sure I could make something. Dawn...do you have a picture? I need the visual. |
You can buy cheap single or double duvets (they got some for about £6 in Asda). Gets single duvet covers from charity shops, or in my case just look in the airing cupboard! If you fold a double duvet and put in a single case they are lovely and springy, or just use a single folded. They need a lot of washing but I used to use them for Polly when she had back leg problems. I found Katy and my Summer move around a lot at night so haven't tried it for them yet! |
What a snappy jacket on the Jack Russel..........
What with all the chaise pads available, check Dollar stores for one and remove the upper, smaller section on the "joint. the lower section is good larger dog size. Upper is for a smaller dog. My guys go very well with the couch, club chair or 2 beds. |
No ASDA here...but I will be checking the dollar stores! |
I'm in awe of whoever even owns a sewing machine, much less knows how to use one. I'm so definitely NOT creative. |
My mother got me a sewing machine for last christmas, it has been a godsend. I learned how to use one in HighSchool, and had been wanting to get one though they(a good one) are expensive. At first I had planned on making coats, and jackets for Greyhounds, and other shorter hair breeds, that may need a little help in that department, especially in the winter months! I started out making a couple beds, when I started we only had the cats(4 of them) I made 2 cat beds, of a generous size, one was an easy rectangle shape, the second was a slightly more complex shape of a flower, I used blue for the center, and orange for the 5 petals. I also made little 'beds' to go in the carriers, they sleep in them now! I have also made a little t-shirt like jacket for a co-workers min-pin, in the summer months she gets over heated easily, so they wet the shirt with cold water and put it on her, she loves it and it keeps her cool. I was also thinking of making my own bed, and crate padding for Cassie, right now I have a couple old blankets in there, she ends up pushing them in the back corner! As for patterns go... thats all you, if you want it to match your decor, or match the personality of your OES, keep in mind it would last longer if you go to a crft shop and got a more durable, longer lasting material. Ask the woker for help, tell them what you plan on doing with it, they they will be able to point out the ideal materials for what you are doing! ALSO keep in mind if you want your bed to be more of a support for your dogs spine, and joints, you could use that foam stuff that would make it look like a mattress, OR you could use loose batting, just make sure you reinforce the stiching, and maybe even double the material so that when it is chewed on it is more resistant to tearing. Good Luck, and have fun doing it, sewing can be addicting. you have set a fire under me now, just talking about it, I know what I'm gonna do when I get home from work... get some fabric, and make Cassie a big fluffy bed!! Let me now how it turns out if you decide to do it!! |

Now I have a reason to look forward to the end of summer - alright maybe not dread the end of sumemr. I have made my own before. no patterns though - I did mix some cedar chips in with the fiberfill though (maybe that was why I didn;t used to have fleas) |
