I just want to clarify that I would just go ahead with the vet recommendation without question, but my husband wants to know if the vet is just trying to get more money. I want to see what you all think. |

My limited understanding is that the heartworm preventive would also kill any potential worms living in the heart, which could lead to fatal consequences. We live in Northern Illinois, and give Oscar year-round meds for prevention, and my vet STILL does the blood work just to be on the safe side. I think it's the necessary protocol, same as doing a blood test before anesthesia to check liver function, etc.

Same here in New York. We give the heartworm pill through November or December - depending on the temps - and the vet does a test annually before we start the pills again. I forget why but I do remember reading somewhere that you should never give the heartworm pills without having the test first. |
I usually just give it year round since it kills most regular worms, too. Our boys are pretty active and get around a lot so it's safer for them that way they don't pick anything up from other dogs. Not to mention, it's really not too much more to just keep up the Heartgard than having to have the blood tests again! |
All of your answers are what I expected. I have a hard time convincing hubby of somethings sometimes. I agree they should be on the tabs all year. Just to be on the safe side. Thanks |
Yeah, my DH was a hard sell too until the vet mentioned it. Now he's the official Heart Guard giver and is very punctual. The kids still get their blood tested as well.
Ticks are already out so we are on Frontline as well.......sigh. |
