I was also wondering at what age she will be gray? I can see a few strands of gray... but she is still rather dark. AND as she gets older does the gray get lighter and lighter, how does that work? Thanks. |

If you shave the fur really close you do have to watch out for sunburn, but as long as you make sure they don't burn it is okay for the fur to be really short. One area especially susceptible to burn is the top of the snout....since the fur usually exposes more skin there anyway.
I personally leave a little bit of a fringe to protect Izzie's eyes. The times that we haven't her eyes have gotten really goopy for a week or so. The little fringe seems to protect them from debris or something. I don't know about protecting them from the sun. |
Thank you, that is all I needed to know about the sensitivity thing, and I have noticed that the area just above her nose is exposed, I was thinking of bringing her to the groomers, and just asking for big poofy eyebrows!! she would be too cute. Thanks again? |
When we shave Barney, we shave him pretty close to the skin, but he's not much of an outside dog, so we don't worry too much about sunburn with him.
As for the gray fur, it depends on each dog. We got Barney when he was 6 months old and he was completely gray at that point, but some other dogs take a much longer time to turn gray, and some are in various black/gray periods for quite a while. As for how light gray she gets, that's just genetic. Some OES are really light gray, some are a very dark gray, and some in between (I know, such a definitive answer! ). And sometimes it changed too. Barney has gotten a little darker since we've had him... |
I don't know how many times I've been asked, "Don't they go blind if you remove the hair over their eyes?" Simple answer, "No and they quit walking into walls as well."
Do what you want, we each have our own favorite way for our puppers. I like open eyes so keep them pretty much trimmed back. However, when hair gets an inch or so longer, it naturally falls about the eyes. If you noticed, when dogs in long coat are home, their hair is pulled back and secured .... the top knot. These guys gotta see too. Ignore what they say on TV dog shows, no they don't see too well with all the hair over their eyes. |
I'd still like to find some information about cataracts and night blindness as it relates to sun/no sun in th eeyse. |
Also...you can use sunblock on the top of the snout if you need to....just make sure she doesn't lick it off |
Allie will always go for the shade when she is outside (Backyard). My mom has commented that she has never seen a dog who really does not like sunlight. It is obvious with her. Even in the winter, so I dont think it is a hot issue. Also, I notice she lays in the shade when her eyes are covered with hair and when her eye hair is short. |
I just want to say... GREAT name
