soft sided crates, harness and other travel needs...

MASSACHUSETTS OR BUST! We are going to the NEOESR picnic and trying to pass the CGC.I will be driving from Florida with 2 of my dogs this June. Each way of the trip is about 20 hours. I will be the only driver (it's just me and the dogs) I plan to stop in a hotel about half way there. What traveling supplies will I need? My crates are too heavy and big to fit in my car (a smaller SUV) I was thinking of getting soft sided crates to use if I need to leave them as I think it will be too hot to leave them in the car unless it is running. I normally keep their leashes in the door so the dogs aren't climbing on my lap. The dog trainer suggested I get harnesses (with fleece on them) so that if I have to stop fast they don't fly and break their necks.

What about dog raincoats incase it rains at the picnic?

What items do you all suggest I have for for this road trip? What brands and what catalogs -- as we only have a Petsmart here in Ocala..

Marie, Sebastian with a tail, and Little Dixie (Charlie Brown will stay home) Hopefully Kiros will be adopted by then...

NEAT!

There will likely be another member coming up from Florida for the NEOESR picnic, maybe you could get in touch with her and find out what she suggests!

I think they are about an hour south of you in Ocala.
I did the reverse trip last year with my two sheepies when arelative had an accident - ours was short notice but what I did poick up was a back seat hammock so Marley could sit on the back seat of the RAV 4 and I could pack my sruff under the hammock along witht he food and bottled water.

Morgan had the back of the RAV and I had a cooler and balankets on the front seat. We slept in the car on the way down and back. I did put a few frozen Kongs with peanut butter in the cooler.

I did stop more often than usual and walk them for exercise.
I do a similar thing as Kerry when traveling with the dogs and a lot of stuff. I pack solid, non-squishable stuff on the floor in front of the back seats. Then I cover the back seat and the stuff with a big comforter. It makes one huge bed for the dogs (and husbands!) while travelling.

This was a picure going to Bassetfest - Todd sleeping with Simon and foster Honey while I drove!
Works great, and nobody falls off the back seat in case of sudden stops. :D

I also make up a tote bag that I keep handy with all my essentials, and another one with the dog essentials.
Some of the dog stuff: no spill water dish, a jug of water, extra collar and leashes, treats, that days' food for feeding at stops on a long trip, a pack of travel baby wipes, the dogs' shot records, a small hand towel.
In mine I put a small towel, kleenex, books/magazine, the mapquest route for where I am going, sunglasses in a hardside case, ibuprofen etc., and whatever else you like. Then I can thow my billfold in later at the event and not take my purse - just the 2 bags.

Good luck!
We drive from Chicago to Florida every winter with Oscar, and I highly recommend the harnesses. We have used them for years, and they do the job. Bottom line, if you are in motion and stop suddenly, or get into an accident, anything loose in the vehicle becomes a projectile, including your dogs. I won't take Oscar anywhere without the harness.

Oscar has his own bag of stuff when we travel. I bring his lead, walking harness, pick-up bags, treats, food, dishes, rags/towels, and baby wipes for quick clean ups. I also bring his Muttluks (booties) as the dog areas at rest stops are full of dog piles, and it's easier to rinse off a bootie or toss it than to clean off sheepie paws. I also have to remember to put on his collar with all of our cell phone numbers and info on it, as Oscar doesn't wear a collar here at home. (He is microchipped, but when you travel, you're not sure what scanners folks have in a particular area.)

Happy Trails!

Laurie and Oscar
Oh and I take a record of innoculations!!!
I take the dog boots too.
I have leashes that have the poop bag dispensers on the handles, so that is covered. I also put one on the handle of the tote bag, so poop bags are always handy.

We have a small travel cooler too. I keep a couple old spoons in the side pockets to scoop out the bit of canned food that I add to the dry. Also a can opener, as sometimes the cans don't have those handy pull rings on top. I freeze water bottles to use as ice, then they can be drank later on. Or refrozen and used again.

I usually bring along a container of cottage cheese as well. It works great to settle upset dog tummies from travel and stress. Makes a good human snack too!
I'd recommend a soft-sided crate for travel IF your dogs are crate trained. If they're not used to being crated, they can get out of even the most expensive ones when they're stressed.

Our soft crate takes up almost as much room folded up as the wire crate but it's easier to assemble and does not snag clothing or damage your car. Some hotels require plastic under the crate. We keep a cheap shower curtain packed in the crate bag.

We use car harnesses on our dogs as well. Not only is it safer in case of an accident, the dogs are secured in the car until you're ready to release them. Scary thought, having one jump out at a rest area or other high-traffic area.

Definitely bring raincoats for the dogs. Most everyone did for Sheepiepalooza last year and it actually caused it NOT to rain. :-)
Take plenty of water. I carry old ice cream tubs for the dogs drinking & food because they are light. Soft crates are brilliant, so easy to use & might make them feel safer & at home in the hotel too? Make sure you have plenty of food & water & spare blankets for yourself too! Oh, and take a *torch just in case :D

*flashlight :D
actually I found I was packing too much water. I 95 between Fl and the NE has a numebr of walmarts etc right off the exit - good for exercise stops and easy to pick up anothe rgallon of water.
