A touch of Parvo? What does that mean? |
Touch of Parvo? You know what they say about horseshoes and handgrenades!!
He may be only mildly sick from the Parvo or had been exposed to it but if he's not in your house I wouldn't go running to bring him in until he has a clean bill of health. Parvo is a hard disease and very, very scary! |
Hi,
While it's true that Parvo has the potential to be deadly to pups and seniors (as most infections are) - vaccinated dogs are in all likelyhood safe. It's why vets recommend you NOT take your pup out in places which is frequented by other dogs until they've had all immunizations at 12 wks. I'm always shocked at the numbers of young puppies that show up at the offleash park and hopefully the owners are grateful when I pass on the info as many don't seem to be aware of the risk. Back to your dilemna: The little tyke probably would recover far better in a home envioronment than a kennel. Derby would in all likelyhood be safe if healthy and immunizations are in place. For myself, I frequently bring in animals with all sorts of health issues and have not had my own healthy pets get anything. Knock on wood. Many animals that are stressed, young or senior are more prone to picking up viruses, disease, ect. I'm also a fanatic about handwashing, keeping the spaces clean in which the unhealthy pets are in...bleach with water kills most germs and sunlight helps heal , so I always try to get as many as possible out in the sunshine or have it filtered in via screens on the windows. A few months ago I had one cat that had ring worm (not really a worm but a very highly contagious fungal infection to both humans and other pets). In my household of dogs/cats/bunnies/guinea pigs this would have been disasterous if it got out of control. Thankfully kitty was in quarantine for 6 wks and my own healthy animals plus the sickly/senior fosters did not get it. The handwashing and bleach/water cleaning did work! Here's a site that I found helpful that may help you make your decision. I understand of course that Derby is your priority and you want your own to be safe before making the offer to help the puppy. http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm Hope that helps and good luck to you! A touch of parvo is like being a little bit pregnant. |
You might consider having a parvo titer
done to see if your dogs' level is adequate to offer protection. |
