Crate Training Help

We just got our oes puppy this weekend and need help w/crate training.
We have a wire type crate with divider. If we put him in the crate while he is awake he barks, stands up on the sides, and really just seems to be very upset and seems to dislike it. He will get in the crate sometimes on his own to sleep but also reacts the same if he wakes up and the door is closed. We're not sure what to do and how to get him to accept the crate. We've never used the crate for any of our other dogs so we're not sure what to do or if this is even normal. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

There's lots of posts on the behaviour (sp?) section, browse around there and you will find lots of advise on crate training.

Make going into the crate a positive experience, offer treats and talk to him when he goes in. The idea is to make it more fon to be in the cage than outside of it. I wouldn't like to go into a cage either unless it was fun to go in. Remember these guys are very smart and will try to see how far can they manipulate you into getting you to do what they want. Be patient and follow the advise you find and everything will be okay soon.
How large of an area does he have with the divider in place? Maybe it's too small - I would try it without the divider. Give him a comfortable place to sleep and some toys, bones, treats, etc. Take it in baby steps - have him go in - close the door - and reward him - then let him out. Keep him in a little longer each time. When he acts up in the crate - tell him quiet and when he responds give him a treat. It will take some time - but keep it up - it makes a big difference in training and ensures their safety when you're not home.

At night - you can try putting a blanket/sheet over the crate - my dogs both slept better covered up (like a cave). Don't give him any attention when he wakes up (other than to take him out for potty breaks and right back to bed).

Good Luck!

The blanket over the crate trick worked for me as well. I moved him from a small travel crate to the wired crate when he got bigger (with a divider) and he barked like mad. The blanket gave him the cave-like feel he wanted.

Also, the first couple of weeks I had my guy I actually slept on the floot next to him. This way he could see me and if he started to whine I could let him smell my hand and let him know it was OK. Took a a couple weeks but he was great after that.

Good luck.
My IG has been ripping out his teeth on his creat what should I do?
What is an IG? An Iguana?
Italian Greyhound.
An iguana would be much cooler though!!
