The vet did tell me it was not genetic or anything that I did. This is the first time I've been on the forum and the first time I ever have had a sheepie. He is a wonderful puppy! |

The surgery for OCD has great results, OCD is either a loose chip of cartiledge floating around in the joint or a flap of cartiledge causing the dog pain. Once the offending piece is surgically removed he will be fine.
Also talk to your vet about his food after, if he is still on a puppy growth kibble you might want to think about more an adult formula to slow down his growth. Best wishes with the surgery and your boy will be so much happier once the operation is over and pain free when he recouperates, he will then be back to his bouncy self again. |
Thanks so much for the information. I have never owned such a wonderful dog. He is the funniest, most loveable boy we've ever owned. I would be so sad if something happened to him this soon. You have made me feel so much better.
I did switch him to an adult food about two months ago. He is eating Canadae. About 5 cups a day split between morning and evening. Not sure if the all natural food is the way to go. I have gotton some conflicting views. He weighs 76.5 pounds and the vet said he will be a big boy. I went to your web site and your dogs are such cuties! I want to put a picture of Jack on here, but I haven't figured how to do it yet. Thanks again Sue |

Jack is adorable! Wishing him a quick recovery from his surgery. |
Hi and welcome to the forum your Jack id lovely. we had the Op done on our oldest dog about 3 years ago and he has been fine since, if the vet is expirienced with OCD then there should be no complications following the Op, keep us informed about his progress. |
My oldie was diagnosed with this at 6 months and was given anti-inflammatories which worked for a while as she was still growing. When the limp came back at just over a year old my vets did the operation to remove the offending cartilege. She turned 10 years old in February and has no trouble with it since.
My vet said that walking up and down the stairs may have caused it but there was no proof of that. I am sure everything will be fine for your furbaby |

I thought Derby had surgery for Elbow Dysplasia? OCD is completely different to what Derby had treatment for. |
Thanks for everyone's support. I feel so much better. Jack had all his x-rays today. The vet showed them to us and said his diagnosis was correct and that Jack was a very cooperative boy under sedation. He is home now and is sleeping it all off.He will be having OCD surgery on Thursday, April 10th. He will have to spend one night and then it will be up to us to keep him very calm for two to four weeks. That might be a bit hard after the first two.Now I have another dilemma. Jack was scheduled to have his summer grooming on May 1st. It was a little early but the groomer is expecting a baby the 15th and is not grooming again until August. I don't know whether to get him cut back this week before the surgery or stay with the original appointment. I'm thinking it might be difficult to brush and comb him after the operation. Any opinions? |
