I Need New Glasses-Help! How do I pick the frames?

I've been having a lot of problems with my vision lately, and decided its time for a check up. I know I will have a prescription change.

For a gizillon years, I've been wearing basically the same glasses. Wirerims, its the old hippie in me.

I want something more modern, but really don't know how to pick them out. The employees at Lenscrafters will make suggestions, but they are all pretty young...and to be honest...I'm not very cool, so I don't like their choices. Especially the thick framed, thin vision area glasses.

I know for my sunglasses I want big, black sexy ones! Woo hoo...maybe some rhinestones on them...but that remains to be seen.

Any advice how to pick out my everyday glasses?

I used to have a website that lets you virtually try on glasses that was super cool. No advice except to post pics after you find some!
Sorry, this old hippie with extremely poor eyesight loves wire rims, polychrom lens and progressives. I don't want big clunky frames on my big old clunky face.
Isn't there something so very charming about wire rims?
I have this problem too, and I don't like the modern styles......thick plastic frames or itty bitty vision area frames. My advice is to take a friend, lol, cuz if you're like me, you can't see what you look like in them because you need your glasses. If you have to go by yourself, take a digital camera, put on the frames, take a pic, then put your glasses back on and see what you thought of the other ones, lol. I have such a hard time because I can't see and I have a thin face and a small bridge. I usually wind up with kid's frames. This time I got a Perry Ellis frame that I love, and its titanium so it's superlight! Don't you hate how much frames cost though? The Perry's were $175, ugh, but I love them. I lucked out on my sunglasses though. I got big chunky tortoiseshell plastic ones that are decent, and they were on sale for $14. Then came the buying of the lenses.......sigh. Good luck on your search!
Deb, if you like the wire rims, they have some more modern shapes, like rectangles, but you still get the wire rim look.

Maybe take your daughter with you, or a good friend who will give you an honest opinion about how things look.
I think so. This time I added a bit of red across the top for a splash to match my orange/red hair. Previously I had the half wires with the fishing line on the bottom of the lens, but I got tired of putting the lens back in the frames as the fishing line didn't hold them tight enough.

Had to reset friend's lens the other day and she was amazed how quickly I could do it........I had 2 years practice before I got rid of the suckers.

I look at the thick frames today and think........1957, Buddy Holly.......Chet Huntley, etc. Clark Kent
Deb, I have heard (incorrectly) that the glasses shape should be the same as your face. Wrong!

Three items: Frame shape should CONTRAST with your face shape

Frames in scale with your face.......no huge glasses on tiny faces

Frame color should repeat your best feature; blue eyes, touch of blue in frames.

here's the website: http://www.allaboutvision.com/eyeglasses/eyeglasses_shape_color_analysis.htm
Deborah, of course you must get progressive lenses. No bifocal lines for us! I got new glasses 2 months ago--my optometrist's office staff is very hip and is our age. They said round frames are coming back in (yeah, they are my fave), rectangle shape is going out, and wire is always in style. The frames are getting bigger than those eensy ones from a few years ago, but not as big as the 1960s. I bought wire rims that kinda match my hair and they are modified round. I refrained from buying the Coach sunglasses that I covet--very Jackie O.

I had bought the fishline frames (in an insane anti-wire moment) a few years back. I can't tell you how many times the lenses fell out! I HATED IT!

Tony has agreed to come with me, but I don't know how impartial he is. I wish my daughter would come with, but she's too tied up with her senior year of college right now.

(Ron, thanks for changing the topic title.)
I recently got new ones. I had several plastic pairs the last few times, so got a wire pair with the dreaded "fishline" . So far, no problem. The best part is, they come with sunglasses that stick on with little magnets by the bows. They work well, and look like they are only one set of lenses. I even wore them out mushing this winter, so they are tougher than they look!
This is the frame style mine are - but they don't show the sunglasses that go with. :(

They also come in all metal styles. Look under IMF eyeglasses.

And an ebay listing that shows the sunglasses in more detail -

My local eye doctor lets us take several pairs home to get opinions - I did that the last 2 times I got new frames. I even took them to work and did an opinion poll. We had fun.
I have an idea...take pictures of you with different frames, post and we'll vote :D
Actually...y'all should show up at Lenscrafters in Vernon hills at 1:45 saturday!!

HA HA...can you imagine if everyone showed up with their dogs to help me?

I may be able to show up and help you out, Deborah. It's 10 minutes from the house. Where's the actual store? I can bring my camera and we can take pictures :D
I was told the top line of the glasses should go with the flow of your brow line.
Didn't follow that with my last pair though. I don't think they are very flattering... oh well.. next time I will go with the brow line thingy again.
Luckily I only need wear my glasses once in a blue moon.
They are only for when my eyes get tired.
Just go with what you like and what you think suits you.
Yep...I'm going to go with my gut feeling. I'll probably (once again) end up with the same frames.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it :D
Brow line? You mean where the hair should be but fell out long ago, or the places it is now that need to be removed like the side of my head or darn near on my eye lids, or that tuft over my nose.

I agree. Let the younger play with fashion, we know what looks best on us...........mostly.
What a turn of events! I went and had my eyes examined. I had a big change in vision. I had progressive bifocals before...and need them ,but even stronger.

Went to pick out new frames, and there were some really attractive ones...HOWEVER! THE NEW RECTANGLE SHAPE ARE TOO SMALL TO HAVE BIFOCALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So....(I asked) what frames do you have that will support bifocals??? They showed me the ugliest frames I've ever seen! And they were outragously expensive. I was so disheartened.

So...I had them put new lenses in my old frames  And now I have my Rx, so I can shop around.

It really wasn't a great experience. Lenscrafter (who used to be a great bang for the buck) have gotten very expensive and very trendy.

The good news is...I CAN SEE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8O
Hmmm... you should look around. :(

Mine are progressive bifocals too. There were some frames they showed me that I needed to stay away from (same issue - too small) because of the bifocals, but there were TONS of cute new frames -including rectangles- that would still work. It hardly even limited my search.

I measured my new ones - they are only 1" tall - at the biggest point on the lens.
I have always found Lenscrafters to be way expensive. I've always found all of the 1 hour places to be expensive. Time was when you ordered your glasses from the neighborhood optician waited 2 weeks then went in for a fitting.

I don't know if you have them in your area (I just checked, they list 10 in IL, including one about 9 miles from your town in Vernon Hills), but "for eyes" is a great value. They do it the old fashioned way -- all of their glasses are assembled in Florida, so it takes about a week, but their prices are pretty good.

I bet if you check around you can find other companies doing the same thing. No instant gratification, but when you save $100... :D
yep...I understand. But because I'm having SO much trouble with my vision, I came to the decision to just get new lenses (in my old frames) and then shop around. I totally passed on Lenscrafters sunglasses.

Yes, Lenscrafters has always been expensive, but they used to give 40% off, if you had Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance (which we do). But they don't do that now. Now I think its only 20%..and the cost have soared.

There are two places near me that are very reasonable...Vision Works, and something like America's Lenses.

I can see cleary now the rain is gone...oops...nebbermind. I can see really well now, so I can take my time and find the right frames for the right price, and even wait 2 - 3 weeks if I have to!
Try Costco, They have great glasses and awesome prices.
We don't have costco, but we do have Sam's. And I've been told they have nice selection.

Thanks.

PS: Have I mentioned how great it is to see again?
