Sophie, who died last month of kidney failure, "gave me 13 years of unconditional love," Winfrey said in a statement to the Associated press. "She was a true love of my life." In honor of Sophie, Friday's edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show will focus on abuses at puppy mills, the wire service reported. Oprah's special correspondent Lisa Ling carried out the investigation and calls the puppy mills "horrific" and "haunting," while Winfrey says the show is "for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment." None of Winfrey's dogs came from a puppy mill. But the host vowed to visit and animal shelter – not a breeder – the next time she adopts a pet. "I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it," she told the AP. "I am a changed woman after seeing this show." It has been a rough year for the dog-loving Winfrey. Sophie's passing follows last July's death of Gracie, Winfrey's 2-year-old golden retriever, who choked on a plastic ball. |

I always watch Ellen, so thanks for the heads up. I'll watch Friday. |
I quit watching Oprah a long time ago, but I will be watching Friday. Thanks |
In Chicago there was a big billboard for a while that said "Oprah please do a show on puppy mills!"
Don't know who put it up, but glad they did and glad she listened!! |
Got this info via email
FYI... Main Line Animal Rescue has been very active in the fight against puppy mills. They put up a billboard in Chicago pleading with Oprah to do a show on puppy mills. Apparently, it worked. Main Line Animal Rescue is going to be on Oprah this Friday, April 4. The show will address euthanasia in our nation's shelters, and the inhumane treatment facing dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills. In preparation for the latter, MLAR went undercover with Special Investigator Lisa Ling and members of Oprah's production staff. They filmed the day to day horrors of actual puppy mills and you can watch as they rescue a number of the dogs they currently have at their shelter. Diane...will watch as well |
I'll be watching! |
I don't watch Oprah and this topic to me is gut-wrenching so I won't be watching. But I hope the show lets people know that if you buy a puppy from places like Petland, you are really buying from a puppy mill.
I'm not an Oprah fan, but she has the ears of millions of people, so I'm glad she's doing a show on this. |
there are posts on other lists against this show as a thinly disguised attempt by PETA to further hurt the pet owner and aid in the campaign against pet ownership.
I am just passing on info. The American Sporting Dog Alliance is organizing a potential boycott of all Oprah sponsors with the assumption that it will be an emotional hit that tries to get more people opn PETA's side. they claim Oprah is also considering posing nude in the PETA latest campaign against fur. I have no opinions that I wish to share on any of this - just sharing info like a good forum member. |
Oh Lord!! Ihope Oprah doesn't get naked. |
Hmmmmmmmm. I will be very dissappointed if Oprah has indeed thrown her lot in with PETA. I just spent a considerable amount of time googling and cannot find an actual connection between Oprah and PETA. There has been "rumor" that Alicia Silverstone has been trying to get Oprah to pose but no confirmation that she is actually "considering it". Most of what has been published is gossip colum revalations and not what I would consider "reputable".
I don't agree with everything that Oprah says and does, I am appalled by her backing of a political candidate simply because of race, but I do think that she at least makes an effort to be socially responsible. Many of her endeavors don't always turn out the way they should but at least she does SOMETHING. In checking into the charitable connections that she has PETA is not specifically listed and she is not listed as one of their "celebrity" sponsors. I'm not sure how an expose on puppymills can hurt pet owners/ownership but I will be watching with an open mind. Lisa Ling has done much reputable video journalism so I hope this is not a PETA promotion. |
Ginny, I also did a google on Ophra's connections to PETA and was unable to find anything.
It is my hope, as she is doing this in memory of a pet now over the bridge, her motives are sincere. I can not imagine Ophra posing for this or any other cause. My motive for posting this is our common outrage concerning puppy mills. Anything/anyone that brings this subject to the forefront I will support.........Kathy BTW: I do not watch Ophra regularly. I just happen across this topic & I have scheduled to record it. I hope she exposes these creatins for what they are |
I had a boss once whose favorite line was "always assume positive intent" so until proven otherwise I will assume, and hope, that it is indeed a good thing! |
