Insomnia

I've had insomnia for about a week. I usually go to bed at 9:30, fall asleep within 10 minutes and get up around 5:30. This week I haven't fallen asleep before 1 am and am still getting up at 5:30. Last night was the worst--it was 2 when I fell asleep and I made myself get up at 7 (punishment perhaps). I know this is due to mental anxiety about my mother, which is weird because my mom is doing fine. My sister has been on vacation but is coming home in a few days so she'll be back in case something happens to mom.

I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow but in the meantime I have 2 Ambien from a co-worker. She said take only half a tablet so I'll follow her directions. I hope I can sleep tonight.

Thanks for listening.

I have to take Ambien CR every night now. I was taking birth control pills to regulate me. When I stopped taking them...I stopped sleeping. I will be (ARGH) 50 next month and I think it is menopausal. If it keeps going on you may want to have your thyroid checked as well. It also could just be anxiety. Don't let it go to long. You might try some herbal remedies. If it is really odd for you not to sleep...go see your doctor.
I cant sleep when I am stressed out. and it just gets worse as you worry about not sleeping. I now try not to nod off in the day, have a warm bath just before I get into bed and spray lavender on my pillow. i also have a hot water bottle as i find it comforting. I have sleeping tablets from my doctor but am scared to take them in case I need to wake up and cant!...Hope you get better soon...
Bless your heart-- nothing worse than insomnia. Have you tried a warm bath and a good book?

Or -- Nighttime Excedrin??

I have the same issues at times- if we are insomniacs together we can chat in the wee hours :cow:
I feel for you!! I'm going through an insomnia spurt myself right now. Some of it's due to the time change since daylight savings...and the other part is due to having to get up several times during the night to help my dad if he needs something. My sister's and I double up and stay over night with my parents as they need 24 hour care. The night's I'm there...I sleep so lightly that I could hear a pin drop....plus not being in my own bed doesn't help. Some mornings I'm up at 3:00 a.m. (yawn) having coffee with my dad because 'he' can't sleep alot of the time. It takes me a night or two to catch up on my sleep...then my turn rolls around to to stay the night again. I have Graves Disease so I can't take alot of medications to help me sleep because it makes me too jittery. I took Ambien after I had my Hysterectomy...and it worked pretty well.

I hope you get some sleep soon!!!! It's so frustrating to not be able to catch those ZZZzzzzz's
That is the worst. I have bouts of it myself. I was good for a really long time, but now I find I fall asleep right away, and wake around 2...with my mind running amok.

I take a Benedrile before bed, so I think that's why I fall asleep well.

Paula, I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't..since I don't even have one for myself.

I'll just wish you good luck, and good advice from your doctor, when you get to talk to him/her.
My Doc once gave me a good tip to help with insomnia, he said when you go to bed count to three, and it works.
Periodicially, I have the same problem. It is often (but not always) tied to pms (lucky me and those around me). What works are the following:

1. Benedryl. Half hour before bed.
2 Warm bath, just before bed.
3. Reading. Avoid tv and the computer.
4. Avoid caffeine after noon.
5. I reassure myself that eventually, my body will take over and I will sleep.
6. Avoid naps. Sooooooo hard to do when not sleeping at night.
7. I don't know if you drink alcohol, but on occasion, a nice hot cup of hot cocoa laced with a shot of amaretto makes me sleepy.
You can also reassure yourself, that even though you aren't asleeping, just resting quietly in bed, will give you some of the recouperative benefits of sleeping.
Queen of insomniac here!!!

I get more done in the wee hour of the night than at any other time. If bored check out the foum, you would be suprised who you find here.

I used to take Ambien but with being on call all the time I can't so instead I do alot of knitting.
I took an Ambien last night and slept for about 8 hours, thank GOD. I'm tired this morning but that is to be expected since I haven't slept more than 4 hours a night for the last 6 days. I actually feel more tired today than I have all week. I'm calling my doctor today and I'll get an appointment for later this week. Don't know how much good that will do though. I really don't want to get into the nightly pill taking ritual. I'm also toying with the idea of calling our Employee Assistance Program just to talk to somebody impartial.....
Paula what I have found going through similar to what you are with the lack of sleep is that it is not necessarily the hours of sleep it is the quality of sleep. If for whatever reason you don't go into all the stages of sleep...you can sleep 8 hours and still get up tired. I don't know what the answer to this is...just thought I would put my two cents in.

I went through the sleep issues for a number of months...so I decided not to fight it...when I would fall asleep for about two hours and then wake up, I would get up and do my housework, or started recording programs on my DVR and would get out of bed, go in the living room and watch those programs. I decided to join it and not fight it I guess. Changing my schedule to accomidate my sleeping pattern took some of the stress away from feeling like I wasn't getting enough sleep. When you just lay in bed and keep looking at the clock...you won't go to sleep...and the stress makes it worse. It could be "change of life" or it could be the stress of you Mom or both....I wish you a night of zzzzzzs.
I feel for you! I have had insomnia on and off since I was 18.
So about 16 yrs. The past 6 years it's been constant, except during my pregnancy with Hayley, I slept like a baby.
I take Restoril for sleep and it works.... most of the time.
I find the morning tiredness is worth it.... just to be able to sleep.
It usually wears off by mid morning.... but I was bever a morning person anyhow.
I hope you can get a good night's sleep soon. ...and good medicine to help! I can understand ...just the part of what a lack of sleep does to you. With a newborn and then a toddler who makes a lot of noises at night (we have a video monitor on at all times and after his seizure... I wake up if I hear anything including a dog lifting their head up!) .......I don't get much sleep and my husband always says it effects me although I don't "feel" it does. Ironically there was just something on tv about a lack of sleep makes you lose your memory more. To top it off, I can't sleep past 4 a.m. w/o getting cramps and agitated (since I was 18 ). Lil J is the same way unfortunately. I'm waiting for myself to collapse on the treadmill every morning.
sounds like we all have some sleeping issues...lol

glad to hear, paula, you finally got some sleep!

i take half of an ambien too...and believe me, if you need to wake up you will...(remember the roof running and the weird backyard noise incidents??)...it just helps to turn off your thinking brain for a few hours....but then again, later some really bizzare dreams do happen!!!
