We are looking for a breeder that breeds excellent dogs, including Champions. Are there any such breeders in the New England states? Are there some breeders that are known to you, elsewhere in the United States that you would recommend? Our Veterinarian provided us with the name of one breeder in California, who we have talked with. The breeder was a very impressive lady, who has dedicated her life to the breed. The only issue, is the long distance between the northeast, and California. In the absence of an alternative, we would be quite comfortable doing business with her. Time is an asset to us, at this point. We have what I think is sufficient time to locate an excellent breeder. Your suggestions would be greatfully appreciated. Happy Holidays! |

Please contact the http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org/ and ask for a referral for a breeder in your area. There are excellent breeders who have dedicated their lives to the breed all over the country, so that is the first avenue to look into. Once you get your referral, you can cross check the breeder's information at http://www.infodog.com to get an idea of how their kennel name stands up in the show world. |
Kudos for you for doing your research and thinking carefully about your decison to get an OES puppy!
You should get a reference from the Breeder Referral contact at the OESCA (info from above post). You should also attend some dog shows and get to know some of the breeders and their dogs. www.infodog.com will have a listing of dog shows in your area! I also recommend getting some references from the OES Rescue organization in your area - and in this case it would be NEOESR www.neoesr.org - they are usually familiar with the reputable and dispreputable breeders in the area. Where in New England are you? Good Luck! Kristen |
Another place to try, beleive it or not, is DogFancy magazine... Like any breeder resource, research in depth anyone you may be considering. I was lucky enough to find Iris breeder through Cat Fancy, and she was a great gal- active in showing, (both Iris' parents were champions), deeply concerned for the health of her animals (pre vet at the time- she actually was my vet for a few years!), I couldn't have asked for better! I went to shows, asked around, and finally went over to see her home in person. Bell's breeder I met at a cat show, another really great lady.
Just take your time, ask about the people you have in mind inside the showing (by which I mean, not only confirmation, but also stock dog, obedience, agility, etc) community, and then ask lots of questions!!! I'm sure that you will find a wonderful breeder, and come away with a gerat new lifetime friend! Karen |

Be careful, anyone can advertise in DogFancy - it's not a testament to their credibility or reputation. I believe Presley's breeder advertises in that magazine and she certainly would NOT be a responsible, ethical breeder! |
yea the breeder we got walter from advertises in dog fancy as well, and i would not recommend them! |
Yes- just like any public advertisement system- caveat empor! However- unlike many other online sources (puppyfind comes to mind) you can also find a responsible breeder through this source. You need to be well educated, and know what to look for. Does your breeder: test their breeding stock, limit their bitches litters to one or two per year, have a specific goal in mind with their breeding program, compete with or actively promote their line, Have a membership with one or more local clubs, keep their animals in a healthy environment, etc. It pays to do your research, but don't blow off possible leads, simply because other people are crooked There are good breeders out there- you just can't go into a situation with blinders on.
