We just got back from this week's session and guess what? She's putting my name on the list to be contact by the head trainer! It starts out with me assisting in a session or two, and when the trainer and I think I'm ready then I get my own class. I'm assuming I would start with the level one classes since that's all I've taken so far. I wouldn't feel comfortable teaching the other levels until I've taken them with Tucker first so I know what to expect. I'm quite excited by this opportunity!! The money isn't much but that isn't my motivation anyway so I dont care much about that. Any advice on this at all??? Also, what books have people read that they've found helpful either in learning about training, dog development, communicating with dogs, etc.?? So far I've read: 1. "The Other End of the Leash", Patricial McConnell 2. "Cesar's Way", Cesar Millan 3. "Puppies for Dummies", Sarah Hodgson 4. "How to Speak Dog", Stanley Coren 5. "The Loved Dog", Tamar Gellar And a few others that I didn't find that helpful. Suggestions???? |

Cool!!
Add Jean Donaldson's "Culture Clash" and "Dogs are from Neptune" Anything by Patricia McConnell - she has several smaller booklets out as well, as does Jean as I recall. Milan? He makes good sense in terms of telling people that dogs need exercise, people need to deal with their dogs from a position of calm confidence, and dogs are dogs, not little furry children. Of course, both ladies above have that message as well, though with a more indepth understanding of how dogs actually tick, and offer solutions that tend to be a lot safer and less traumatic for the dog and the trainer. I know a lot of people adore the man, but personally I find some of his methods a little scary, and so would my dogs. Good luck and have fun with it!! And never forget that your job is to train the human (to train the dog). Dog training is EASY in comparison. Ask Sybil's agility instructor Kristine |
I would definitely read Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt- if for no other reason than many people will have read it and you need to be familiar with it. (also I think the program is wonderful ) |

Geesh! Now I have to add it to MY list as well. Thanks, Kerry! I know you've mentioned it before and I put it on my "some day" mental list, and now that I am kind of low on reading material I could use a more training related fix at the moment. Off to order a copy KB |
Don't Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor, and The Power of Positive Dog Training, by Pam Miller...
And I ditto Patricia McConnell books and Joan Donaldson's books... |
