I have spoken about rescue assisting him, so here I am...! If they cannot find the right home they will surrender him to me, but it would be better for the pup to go directly to his permanent home...The family has been given lots of information on how to screen, and I am comfortable that they will do a good job of it. If I could assure the family that I would take him and keep him, he would be with me now...but I will not lie to them...I do not need another dog, so would not be keeping him... But gosh, how I wanted to lie so badly!!!! PM me for more information..He will only be going to an OES experienced non-smoking home with a fenced yard. |

Did you ask where they got him? If he is from a breeder then they should be informed. |

Thanks Stacey. I have been in this for a long time, and that is the first option I always look at....Unless the breeder is not a good option for the sake of the dog to go to. In those cases I might just ask for a donation towards the dog's badly needed vetting....HaHa...I can count on one hand the number of times something has rolled in.... Once I had a very reputable show breeder (not OES) who would take the dog back but euthanize her, because she was 5 and needed surgery. Rescue kept her, raised the money and the dog is now living in a convent in Toronto. In this case Breeder had already been contacted and is not interested in taking him back or helping with re-homing him. The folks were very surprised, as they thought the breeder would be in the best position to help him. I, on the other hand, am not....(surprised, that is). |
Please PM me with the particulars.
I am in Sudbury but would certainly drive down. We actually saw another on Kijiji, but the guy never returned my e-mail. I could drive down this weekend, so keep me informed. It seems like there are a few of these guys around the Ontario Region. Do we have a rescue? Cuz`I gotta tell ya, I am considering it... My daughter just asked me the other day for a boy dog like Maiseys -Blue. Here's hoping!!!! YAYAYAYAY!!!! |

Nicole, I'm sorry I can't help it is so sad to hear this. I just recently found out the same thing about my breeder too. Not that I would have any problems with Boni - he is great, the best dog ever - but Grannie Annie told me they get a lot of dogs from Boni's breeder. It is heart breaking! |
I too am having a moral dillema concerning this little one!
I have talked to the lady a few times and she has asked some great questions...(including sending pictures of my family and Maisey.) My issue is my wireless fence. She wants me to have a physical fence. The lady would like me to sign some kind of non-breeding contract??? (which I have no issue with, because I would NEVER breed him) But when it comes to the physical fence, I am just not sure I have a couple of thousand dollars to spend enclosing the yard. Not to mention, that I live in the boonies, and her prime concern is about a bear or another dog or wild animal getting through the fence...my issue has always been that a fence will not stop a bear...but it will stop your dog from escaping.... And for the two wireless transmitters and collars it was like $1100.00 And it works on Maisey... So what would you do? Sign the "contract" or not? |

Right, a physical fence is not going to stop a bear if it really wants to get on your property. Plus they are afraid of dogs for the most part so I think the concern is a little exaggerated. There have been a number of discussions about a wireless fences here. People that do not have them are very adverse to them and it's always difficult to convince them otherwise. Some neighborhoods you are not allowed to have physical fences and that is the case with ours. We had to convince our breeder and finally when she saw how it worked with her own eyes she was fine with it. We really don't leave our dogs unattended, mostly because we have an active neighborhood. I would think the woman would be happy that her dog was going to an experienced OES family far more than worrying about the fence issue... |
I went to get Crudo today. (think I might change the name)
He is actually 4 months old, and is really cute, but his ears are the worst case of infection I have ever seen. They are swollen completely shut on one side and 80 % on the other. They had meds for the dog including prednisone drops and pills. They are AWFUL!!! I am going to have some issues, as the dog seems slightly aggressive. He guards food and toys and bit myself and husband when we were medicating his ears. He also may have hearing issues, as he does not respond to verbal calls or his name... I am bringing him to the vet as soon as possible(they are closed for weekends), but I think they may have to sedate him in order to examine him. I have many questions about rescueing, but my major thing is the guarding, I have young kids and am concerned he may bite one if they try to take his toy. I would flip him on his side to dominate him, but am concerned about the ear problems... Any experinece with this? Should I just dominate him, regardless of his pain? I don't want to traumatize him any further....but cannot let him bite my kids either.... What would you guys do? |
Thank you for rescuing him!!
First thing is get that ear infection cleared up. Sounds like he is in a lot of pain and that can totally effect his behavior. Once he's better you can work on manners, he is still a baby and you should have no problem training. |
This puppy is in a lot of pain with ears that badly infected. Think about how you feel when your ears are hurting. Give him time to start feeling better and I am sure you will find a sweet dog under all of that pain. If his ears are infected as much as you say he probably really can't hear you or understand what you are saying. I have had bad ear infections along with my shingles so I really know what the poor puppy is going through. Puppies are like children, they take a lot of patients and are not born with a book of manners in their heads. Thank you for rescuing this little boy...good luck. |
Be careful of pulling on the collar too. The only time our Maggie ever bit at me was when she had an ear infection (I didn't know yet) and I pulled on her collar. I knew something had to be wrong, as she was not like this normally. Sure enough, she had bilateral ear infections!
Her's wasn't even that advanced - no external signs, no drainage - but it was still hurting her. |
Yes, get the ears cleared up before assessing temperment issues. Infections can seriously impair hearing and can seriously affect disposition.
Definitely change that name. |
Just got in from out of town for 4 days with no computer....

I would flip him on his side to dominate him, but am concerned about the ear problems... Any experience with this? Should I just dominate him, regardless of his pain? I would bring him back. Food and toy guarding is dangerous to have around children. That is a the main reason why rescues do not adopt out to homes with young kids. Many dogs have this behavior and it takes time and patience to work thru it. And it may never be 100% reliable. And if one of your kids has a friend over, who doesn't know the rules during re-hap, someone will get bitten and it could be a death sentence for the pup. Only people who are serious about making a long-term committment to work through the reasons for the behavior and not only treat the symptoms, can overcome this. Here is my favourite site about resource guarding. http://ahimsadogtraining.com/blog/resource-guarding/ Please do not flip him over, hold him down, or anything like that. That has nothing to do with dominating him. You are going to make him fearful of you and defensive, and with him already on the defense he wil get worse and unpredictable. Here is an article on what it actually does in a dog's eyes. That dominence theory is old and wrong. http://www.bogartsdaddy.com/bouvier/Tra ... oll_no.htm That combined with resource guarding is a very dangerous combination. How did the bites while treating his ears occur? I have treated many, many sick dogs with ear infections and have never been bitten. Maybe I can give you some hints on how to do it without getting him stressed. How hard did he bit? And did he growl or snap, first? Was blood drawn? This does not sound good at all. edited to correct the second link.. |
My kids re-named Crudo while I was at work, and my husband ok-d it. Emperor Kuzco. It actually seems to suit him though. I kinda wanted to name him Leroy Brown.
We have had no more biting issues. Not even when medicating his ears. The infection was so bad on this little guy (little being 50 lbs) that there were what felt like tumours on the back of his neck and under where the collar was. I say ``was`` because he is now uncollared untill I can be sure all the infection has drained. At least the ear canals are visible now. He has been to the vet and given a little stronger drugs. Prednisone and some others.... That could have made him a little cranky too. I was a little worried, but it seems like unjustified. I am sure it was due to the horrrific pain he must have been in. My hubby has been hand feeding him, and for the last 3 days, we have fed them, Maisey first, and have had no issues. I honestly remember at one point on the 5 hour trip back, my sister called to see how things were going, and I told her I thought he was dead, as he had not moved or made a peep for the entire trip. He is really mellow, but I think when he is better he will race and tear the same as Maisey. I am sure the ears have affected his equilibrium. He is due to have his 3rd puppy shot, and neuter on April 22nd. I do have a wireless fence, but will not attempt to train untill he is 100%. Earlier this week about 2 cups of junk came out of his ears all at once...EEEK!!! Smelly... But I bathed him up, and he was a total Rockstar in the tub. And he smells a million times better. Still stinky though, but I think he will be until the rest of the infection is out. Which will be soon I hope... All in all, I think I was worried for nothing. I will get some pics up as soon as I can. Thanks for all your help and concern.... Especially Nicole... you are an angel |
this is one of those stories that meakes me shed tears of joy. CONGRADULATIONS on his rehabilitation and bless your heart for not giving up. Also a pat on the back to everyone that took time to help this situation this is the best website i've ever seen and am so glad to be even just a little part of it.
congrads again and can't wait to see those pics!!!! ps- lets ass kick that terrible breeder who wouldn't take responcibility for their pup!!!! he was probably MUCH better off at his new home |
Remember ear infections might be linked to food allergies. So the road may still be bumpy. Glad his ears are clearing. |
Maisey has ear infections too. So I was comfortable with that...till I saw them.. Then not so much....
But they are getting there and, so are we. I only got bit the first two times putting the drops in his ears and since he has been a peach. I think it was that he was in pain and I had not gained his trust yet. It's something we're working on Now he seems happy to get his meds. (if that's possible) And when I take the brush out, he runs to his dog bed and nudges me. He LOVES being groomed. (Not like Maisey) He's the perfect dog other than the slight adjustment period and medical problems. Oh well...that's why they make vet insurance....lol Maisey seems happy too, so all is working out..The Creator had a plan, I just had to get with the program.... |
i am vert intersted in the rescue oes,I would give him a nic home |
If anyone needs Joyce's apparent phone number, pm any mod. I will be away from the computer for a bit. |
Nope. He's ours now...Got him neutered today and he's turned out to be such a little(ahem) doll!!!
I really have no idea who his breeder was, but I seriously could get even with them Mike Tyson style. His ears have come a long way, but they are still pitiful and I am relatively sure he has some form of displaysia. He falls all the time. The vet said to hold out on that diagnosis for a bit, as the insurance does not cover it quite yet...I am trying to convince myself that his ears are throwing his balance off. I also was told by the vet today that I should go to a vet dentist, as his bite is not right, and his teeth are cutting up his mouth on the inside. YAY vet insurance!!! Other than his medical issues, he has been an angel. I have never felt more happy and rewarded by any single thing I have done in my life. He is the sweetest, most loveable little one! Will upload a pic later on this evening! Thanks again for all of your well wishes! |
I love when people flunk fostering 101. Congratulations on the new addition to your family and have our fingers and paws crossed that it is just his ears causing the imbalance. |
