One Testicle

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this, as this is the first time this has happened to me.

When I took my pups to the vets at 7 weeks for their check-ups, the vet told me the boy that I was keeping (Sawyer) only had 1 testicle down, but she could feel the other one at the rim and it should come down. Since then, I haven't left the poor boys parts alone! Sometimes there are none there, sometimes one...and I think once I felt them both! He was 10 weeks old yesterday. Again, sometimes there are none there, and today there was 1.

I have been doing alot of reading on the subject, and have read so many differing opinions. My vet says that if they are not both down at 11 weeks then it wont come down. I have read others say it can take up to a year. I have also read that heavier dogs tend to take longer to drop both parts(Sawyer is a monster....he was 14 lbs at 6 weeks and is now 25 lbs at 10 weeks. I have read about massages you can do... 8O

So basically I am curious if anyone else out there has had a sheepie with only one, and at what age did it come down if at all it did come down. As some of you know I show my dogs so having two is a necessity for me :D

Any opinions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I can't give you any specific times/ages, as the last time this happened was when I was a young person and my parents had a male Brittany that was slow to drop the 2nd testicle.

11 weeks seems too young to say it will "never drop" - especially if it is that close that the vet could manipulate it. Just my opinion though, with no medical statistics to back it up!

From a sheep veiwpoint (more experiance there  ), we have some males that we have to delay the neuter, as they are slow to drop one, or they do the yoyo thing for awhile!
My male was a myabe when we chose him - he had had two decended, then one, then two, then one. By the time we got him at 8 weeks though I think both were down, although I had been told it could take longer.
Ah, yes, where's Sunny when you need her?

STOP touching the poor boy

LeAnne's Clay's second one didn't descend till he was something like 16 weeks old. Sunny's Luca (Clay's cousin - dams are sisters) didn't wait quite that long - maybe 12 weeks? Breeder and I both thought it would have come down sooner if Sunny would have stopped fondling him   Luca has two sons and one of them was pretty slow to drop (12 weeks too?)

I'm not sure if there is a connection between slow to descend and an increased risk of monorchidism in a line, but two males in a repeat litter of Luca and my Mad ended up one ball wonders and were neutered and placed. One was gorgeous (of course, right!) and so breeder waited five months before she finally conceded it wasn't going to happen. Their sire went on to produce monorchidism with other bitches.

I was concerned when I bred Mad but all of her four boys dropped both by 7 weeks. I went completely out when I bred her, though not for that reason. One of her sisters was bred to a dog who is behind Clay (frozen, long gone) and I believe she produced one monorchid. Who knows what the mode of inheritance is, but I think I would be a little concerned if I started seeing an pattern of puppies whose testicles are slow to descend. Just something you'd want to keep in mind when you are picking future stud dogs, that's all.

That said, you're talking one puppy and seven weeks seems a little early to truly be concerned. He's probably still yo-yoing. It will be tempting to fondle him every day a la Sunny, but you may find it here today, gone tomorrow for several weeks yet and just drive yourself crazy.

Ooops - sorry, I shouldn't reply unless I'm completely awake. Missed that he's ten weeks now. I still say stop fondling him. And it can still happen.

Amber it can happen it can reticulate up and down till about 4-6 months of age, good the vet actually felt and palpated the one disappearing up and down at the moment, so should be absolutely no problems with undescended testies. Just give it time and leave the fella alone.
Thanks so much everyone for the info. I have a family anxiously awaiting the results of this as they want him if I don't keep him, and before I read your posts I was going to let him go at 11 weeks if they were not both down as per the advice of my vet but now knowing there is hope I will wait it out...and stop touching them

Just an update. :D

I have a friend who has Toy Fox Terriers and shows - her dogs are often nationally ranked. We were talking last night and her young male just "dropped" - at almost 9 months! He previously was a one ball wonder, but the other one could be felt up there.

She really loves everything about this male, so she is really thrilled he finally dropped.
  thank goodness I only ever have bitches.
I do have 2 male guinea pigs though, and when you are carrying them you can feel their bits and bobs..... the 2 little girls who live next door have 2 male piggies as well. One little girl said to me we have had to bath Pip because he sweats and his back gets all sticky!...and then she wandered off. Mum said they keep getting frisky but the girls are too young to realise...bless them...
