OraVet Plaque Prevention Gel

Does anyone have any comments about OraVet Gel ? I am not sure if it is needed. I brush Winston's teeth daily - he actually thinks brushing his teeth is a treat :). Anyway, I have had had two vets in this area suggest using this product. We have recently moved from MT and no one there ever mentioned this to me. I can't figure if they are just trying to sell me one more thing or if this really is something to do. Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

I have used it on Allie for about 1-1/2yrs now. He teeth are very white and pretty. I sometimes forget for about 2 weeks also  I also brush Allies teeth once in awhile, which my mom feels I should do that more then the Oravet.
When my vet sold the Oravet to me, they said it really will last 2 times longer then they claim...Which it has!
I think if you're brushing your dog's teeth once a day than you don't have to worry about using the product although my vets swear by it too for tartar control. But brushing that much is great! :D
My vets from 3 different states recommend it. I used it. Prefer just using mouthwash in water.
how do you get your dog to think teeth brushing is a treat?????
why would you brush a dogs teeth instead of adjusting their diet to help? sorry I have a thing against teeth in any species and brushing their canines is one thing I draw the line at.

I have no clue how this happened - but when I bring out his toothbrush and toothpaste, he promptly comes and sits in front of me and waits for me to begin. Maybe he likes the taste of the toothpaste? Who knows.
Some dogs don't chew their food and are allergic to every bone out there, so having something additional to remove plaque doesn't hurt. Bad genetics also plays a role in how bad a dog's teeth are esp those toy breeds!!

I totally understand. Please expand further about adjusting the diet. Winston only gets a dry venison kibble to eat and a hard NylaBone for chewing. He has a sensitive stomach so I have to be careful what I do. Please let me know what you do. If I did not have to brush - I would love it.
Sneakysheepie, we are in the same boat. With all of Oscar's digestive issues, he only gets his kibble which he doesn't chew at all 8O, so his teeth get really bad. Oscar's chiropractor told me that the tartar and plaque build-up comes from the kibble, but most dogs chew bones that clean their teeth.

After Oscar's last teeth cleaning, we are now using the OraVet Gel, and it seems to be helping.

Laurie and Oscar
we are having great luck switching Morgan (our sensitive stomache ) to raw foods. Right now he gets 2 cups of kibble and a raw addition. He doesn't finish his kibble (a first). the bones in raw are supossed to be better for their teeth. I know he is more content and dinner takes more than 2 minutes now! I also hvae dental kongs for him so he has to work harder at getting his treats and the dental kong works on his teeth and gums as well.

Some dogs have bad teeth, just like people. Our first OES we never brushed or had his teeth cleaned, and they were in good shape when he passed at age 13. Frank we had to have his teeth cleaned just recently at age 4 and Rebecca had her first teeth cleaning at age 8. Due to the cost of getting teeth cleaned around here, I'm totally opting to brush their teeth from now on instead of spending $400.

When I brush their teeth the hardest thing is having the dogs trying to lick the paste off of their teeth while I'm brushing. It's a very slobbery process, but I just try to do it really quick. I'll bring the toothbrush with me to Maxmm's grooming party... :D
What type/flavor of toothpaste do you use? I bought some type of mint doggy toothpaste and Rheba hates it. Is it worth it to get a meaty flavor in hopes that she will like the brushing.

I tried to brush her teeth with one of those disposable electric toothbrushes. I accidentally clicked the toothbrush into the "on" position. I think Rheba had a heart attack! She freaked out. My husband and I laughed so hard....maybe that's why she now hates getting her teeth brushed....bad mama! bad mama!
Well my kid would prefer candy toothpaste over real toothpaste, so I'd assume a dog would prefer chicken toothpaste over nasty mint, but that's just me. The electronic toothbrush thing would freak the heck out of most dogs, I would think!! Any loud sound (clippers, etc) freaks dogs out.
I would give the meat flavors a try. CET is the brand I use and they make quite a few different flavors. Winston has allergy issue can't have anything with a "meat" flavor. The Malt flavor is what I buy and he LOVES. You also might want to try a regular toothbrush made for small children. I have bought several of the the dog toothbrushes - but found that toothbrush for little kids works the best. It has a smaller brush head and easier for me to use on him.
Please don't use human toothpaste because it can make a dog sick as they end up swallowing it.

My dogs don't care what flavor, but currently we are using the poultry. In the whole scheme of things, I really don't think the toothpaste matters all that much. I think it's more about the brushing/scraping the gunk away, but I really don't know...
When I brush their teeth the hardest thing is having the dogs trying to lick the paste off of their teeth while I'm brushing.

I put a bit on the tip of the toothbrush, let her lick that, and then I put the paste (chicken flavor) in the bristles. Her toothbrush head is "v" shaped which makes it easier to get all angles and gives me somewhere to put the paste. Abi loves getting her teeth brushed. She will remind me (takes me to where her brush and toothpaste are and licks her chops) when I forget.
