When I picked him up on Wed- he seemed tired but happy and excited to home. He even ate some cheese. He didn't eat his dinner that night though. We thought he was just tired from a week away. On Thursday morning he still seemed out of sorts. He didn't want to eat again. I called the doctor, and they told me this is quite normal when a dog has been away. Max may even be "upset" with us for leaving him. We made an appoinment for Friday so they could make sure he was ok. I didn't think at that time it was serious. Thursday eve he slept most of the night, and didn't care to give us kisses. He did eat boiled chicken by spoon, and drink quite a bit of water. Friday morning he was weak and could hardly walk. I had to lift his hind legs for him. John stayed home from work and took him to the doctor ASAP. His temp was 104. His blood work shows he is anemic. He has an infection of some sort-- but we aren't sure where it originated. His urine is clear, no signs of infection. They immediatly started him on antibiotics, and he is responding. He seems perkier and wants to give us kisses. They wanted to keep him overnight to evaluate. He is home now, still weak, but seems to be feeling better. We are doing the excercises we did when he was immobile. Don't want him to go backwards in that respect. Poor Max. Even though he is on the mend, I feel guilty , guilty, guilty. We shouldn't have left him that long with his special needs. Or- we should have had a relative who loves him and knows his routine come to our house to care for him while we were gone. We love and trust his vet, but, we should have thought this out. |

I understand how you feel. We feel so bad with Ralph and his rice. I hope Max gets better soon. |
Awee... don't beat yourself up over something you didn't know would happen. He was in good hands, and now you know he may prefer being with someone familiar. We'll just send our doggie wishes to Max that he feels better soon. |
Sorry to hear about Max. Please don't beat yourself up. Dogs getting sick while kenneled is fairly common. Hope he is back to his normal self soon. |
Aww poor Max... don't blame yourself though.
I hope he is back to his old self soon |
Aww poor Maxie! But I agree with everyone -- you should not feel guilty. These things happen. I would not even rule out leaving him in a kennel again at some point. Maybe it was just a fluke thing that he got sick this time. Maybe the kennel offers more individualized attention -- like one on one cuddle sessions -- that would make his time easier. Maybe another kennel is better suited to manage a special needs dog. He is too young to rule out kennels for the rest of his life.
In any event, I hope he feels better soon. |
No, no don't feel bad. With a special needs dog, being in a place with medial attention available seems like the obvious choice. And everyone's right, it could've happened anywhere, you never know. I hope he gets better fast! |
Lori,
Don't blame yourself. I hope Max is feeling 100% better really soon. |
I'm so sorry to hear that Max is not well. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! |
Absolutely, don't blame yourself. You deserve some time away too, and you knew he was in a safe place. Hope he feels better real soon! |
