Changing a rescue dog's name

Lizzie (nee Molly) is my darling rescue. I had changed her name because some of you may remember my angel Mean Ol' Molly, who went to the bridge. I just couldn't call anyone else Molly.

Lizzie started "school" yesterday, and the trainer has worked extensively with rescue, and she commented, she always feels its best to change a rescue's name when they get their furever homes. It gives them a fresh start.

I never thought about that. I just know "Molly" belonged to the mean ol' one.

What are all of your thoughts on this subject?

When I rescued Maggie, she came with the moniker "Elle Mae" which sounded to me like an ozark hill-billy. So in memory of the sweet OES that my DIL owned when they lived with me, I changed the dogs name to Maggie. The prior owner had never registered her, so I was able to register her with AKC with that name. Didn't seem to make a difference to the dog.
I recently rescued Asia and changed her name from Sparkles. She was predominatly left out in the backyard, by herself, most of the time, so did not respond to her name. As soon as I started calling her Asia, she responded. My friend, who I got Asia from, came by the other day and was surprised when I called Asia she responded right away. I kinda wondered what would happen when the moment would come and she would find out I changed her name. lol My friend said she was really surprised at the difference in her already. How well she was doing.

Anyway, back to the original question...Violet was a rescue and I kept her name...it really fit her. So I really don't think it matters to the dog, just to us.
I think you're right. If we give them names "we" like, they are more "ours".

I don't think there is any species on earth that wouldn't be eternally grateful that you changed its name from "Sparkles" to something else!

That is my thought exactly. Sparkles is hideous! 8O
I have changed all my rescues' names....if they came with one.

We did not know Pepsi's name until 5 days after we adopted him.
We had already named him Pepsi by the time we found out what his name had been.
Lacey was also just a # on a cage door. She was a stray so had no known name.
Rags had a name, Kylie, but it didn't fit her. Then I came to find out she had had a previous name too.
Harley, our German Shepherd, had the name Apollo, which we just hated.
He needed a fresh start anyway.
tulo seems to love his new name. took him about a minute before he realized that tulo meant him.

i didnt mind dudley but you're right... it has the psychological effect (on me) of making him my dog instead of someone elses.
Lizzie became Lizzie the second time I said it. Easy transition for her...happy transition for moi!
