Strangest looking beaver....

Ok,
So, Maisey has chewed on sticks since she was a puppy and because I am afraid of bones and rawhide, I figured it was not a big deal....
Dogs chew sticks right...
(I know, where is my head sometimes...bones, no sticks yes...)
Ok, here's my issue...I think she's actually eating them... And due to the "bathroom disaster" we had today, they are not digestible or agreeing with her....
So how do I break her of this habit now?
It is gonna be hard to give up the twig, and there are no Lumberjacks Anonymous here....

When you figure it out let me know....Bosley is a beaver, also...I stop at letting him drag the branches into the house...
I run around like a maniac picking up downed twigs, branches and, occasionally, small trees... 8O

The only thing that has kept them from bringing their trophies into the house if I'm not fast enough in the clean-up department (after a storm, for instance) is that they seem to go for the ones that are too big to fit through the door horizontally... Then they look at me like I somehow made it not fit.

Macy taught me to toss some of their safer shank bones out there. She likes to swipe them from the house and leave them outside for her future chewing pleasure. Once we had a small supply out there I noticed the twigs and so on were no longer so appealing. That's not really a solution either, but it has helped.

George has just discovered sticks at 15 months old!! (I guess hes slower than most dogs  )

He was with a springer spaniel on a night time who is a stick chaser and George just thinks this is GREATEST GAME EVER!

Now as soon as we get to the nature reserve where we walk he starts to look for sticks. Thankfully he doesn't chew or eat them or at least not yet!!!
I Pick them up whenever I pick up poop. this doesn't mean I get them all before the dogs though, especially since I noticed none of our trees have any branches left at "dog height". Yep they are picking off their own - when my husband figures it out it won't be pretty - these are all trees planted just last summer :(
It's a young dog thing. Abbott, the Newf, even at up to 5 years old would take split firewood from the pile, drag it to the front yard and proceed to tear it apart.......my own personal firewood splitter. Softer woods such as cottonwood, he chew like a beaver.

I too started getting the shank bones available from your friendly butcher. Try the speciality markets. These uncooked wonders eventually curbed Abbott and all the other beavers in the yard. Of course the bones were murder on the lawn mower blades!!!! 8O
Phoebe doesn't seem interested in sticks but she does chew natural materials that she finds in the house: the pinecone from a Christmas decoration, the woven basket ornament from the Christmas tree and pieces of potpourri. Her second owner told us that she once ate a dried starfish.

OMG Our first guy did this. Ate several of the legs off of a giant dried starfish we had bought and brought back from Hawaii. It was on a table for years, suddenly it was a snack.

The explosions that came from that dog filled with little bits of starfish.... 8O

Maybe he felt he needed some calcium.

A Komondor will take care of that for you. They lay in them and get them nice and stuck in their cords and bring them in the house for you. 8O I've pulled full size branches off of Bear's butt before and I'm constantly finding twigs in my bed. :(

Can I rent him?

Belle has some of that capacity but, being cordless, it doesn't amount to much

 LOL

Bingley is a stick chewer when he can be. There aren't many chewables in this area of FL but when we visited MT he was a maniac!!!
Hi,

Intrestingly enough in the wild, mother wolves will often bring in sticks into the den when pups are teething.

Our guys may think "hey look what mom left for me to chew on!" when they come across shoes, toys or other things left on the floor. Just be thankful it's sticks and not anything else!

I would try redirecting. When Hunter was teething we would catch him with sticks. My response was NO and then giving him an appropriate chew toy like a rawhide/bone and then praising him once he started to chew it. This pretty much took care of our stick problem.
I'm waiting for Chaunce to poop a 2x4 8O
Archie is a lumberjack / beaver (as well as a cat!) too!

with a slight twist, tree products are only really interesting / tasty when covered in bark, once the bark is removed he soon becomes bored.

I am more worried that when he is trotting along with the end of the branch is in his mouth and something catches his attention and he turns to look whilst still trotting along that he will spear his palette.

After all what is more dog like that seeing one with a stick?
Nigel and Bella will eat the bark and loose pieces from the firewood. He is still a dumb puppy at 10 months, but she is a grown up. I guess she figures if he does it, she should too. Geez.
