hello and help!

hello, I am Sue from the UK. I have just adopted a 10 month old OES and of course she is gorgeous, but she does have some 'issues'! firstly her coat, looked fabulous until you felt all the tight candyfloss matts underneath.
I tried for a week to tease them out but it was gone too far so she has been clipped down and now resembles the dog you would not want to stroke as she looks mangey! now i know she will grow back eventually and at least now she's not uncomfortable because of the matts.
On the lead she was a nightmare - pulling and barking at everyone. I hired a trainer and though he didnt tell me anything i didnt already know, i did see her walking like a 'normal' dog! I have persevered and it is so much better after about 10 days, though not yet perfect!
my question really is how long does it take to grow back a 5 inch coat? will she ever look like an old english again.
i will get my kids to put before and after pics on, but at the moment its a miracle that i have got this far as me and computers dont work!
thanks for reading from Sue and the lovely (if somewhat raggedy QQ)

Hi Susan,

Welcome to the forum! You did the right thing by having
your sheepdog groomed to a short cut. The matts can get
difficult especially in rainy or snowy weather.
The coat will grow back at about 1 inch/month, and it will
come in beautifully.

Take a look at Carl's essay (in the Grooming section). He gives a
wonderful lesson (with pictures) on how to line groom your
dog. This is a wonderful method for keeping tangles at bay.

For pulling on a leash, try a Gentle Leader. It will help your
dog listen to you and not pull. Our trainer told us to stop each
time he pulled, then continue. It helped a lot.

Hope you enjoy the forum!

Hello and welcome to the forum.....You will get alot of great advice here....post a picture when you time...we love pictures!!!!
Thanks for making me feel welcome, we live in Warwickshire, UK, and don't know anyone really as we have only been here a few months.
QQ turns a lot of heads and everyone wants to stroke her but she would rather bark at everyone at the moment. I am hoping lots of walks and patience will help overcome this.
We are all amazed at how we all fell in love with her and she with us, it was instant.

even though shes a rescue she was not ill treated, just people who saw a lovely puppy and gave no thought to how she would grow and what her grooming would entail. she also lived in an apartment so no wonder the lead proved strange. I had previousley had 2 high maintenance dogs a bichon frise and a standard poodle who I adored. Grooming an OES should be easy after that. but omg the hairs, not used to that at all. i thought this might become an issue but we dont care we love her so much now that we dont even notice them until we are out shopping then my husband insists of frantically brushing them off me!
as soon as one of my kids shows me how, i will put pics on, but till then i am beaten by technology

Hi Sue!

Welcome to the forum! I had to shave my puppy in June. This is how he looked then....(I left his hair long on his butt so it looks as if he had a little bunny tail.)

And this is how he looks now in February...

Hi Sue, welcome to the forum! We are in Kent UK, our sheepie boy Rufus is 7 months old. Sounds like your puppy is behaving normally for a sheepie :D you will need to keep training her through her puppy time (up to 2 years ish) so a few weeks training is at least a good start! It's a continual thing which will get easier with time, as long as you keep it up. You will get lots of advice here.
As for the coat, it will grow really quickly. We line groom (see Carl's essay) every 2-3 days as he is at the age when his coat is changing. I advise you brush her all over every few days so she is used to you touching her all over, when her coat comes back she will be ready for grooming sessions!

If you have any questions just ask- there are lots of experts here to help!

Also, see our 'UK SHEEPIE DAY' thread in General Chat :D
Warwickshire is not too far from me! well closer than USA    We had to shve our old sheepie once when she got too matted, it grew back in no time at all.
The first time I had to have Mona Lisa shaved I cried when I picked her up. I thought my groomer was going to have a heart attack because I got so upset so I tried to make her feel better. It takes a while for the hair to come back though. Then I finally got ML's hair back to 2-3 inches and she looked like a teddy bear, I went to work and didn't have as much time so she got all matted again and had to be shaved. I'm used to it now but it was tough. I have since quit that job and now ML and I have lots more time together and her hair is slowly growing out. It's hard that first shaved cut because they look like totally differnt dogs but give her a couple of months and your OES will be adorable again!!
