Food for itchy/sensitive skin

Does anyone have any recommendations for an itchy sheepie? It'd have to be found in a local grocery or pet store (I mean, it can be Petco or whatever), because we don't seem to have much in the way of specialty shops for food for dogs.

I'll take suggestions on favorite brands or favorite combinations (ie, no chicken whatsoever, but salmon is ok).

Currently we have Barns on a lamb and rice formula and I'd like to try something else to see if it helps. He was on Beneful of some kind before this and I wanted to try to see if lamb worked better than chicken.

What have you tried already? That might help guide suggestions.
what about ACANA salmon and potato mine love this stuff, they also have lamb and rice.
is that a canadian food - I have never heard of it.
Oscar eats Nature's Recipe Venison and Brown Rice, available at Petco or some Petsmart stores. It says on the package that it's for skin issues, but Oscar eats it because of his digestive issues. He can't tolerate beef, pork, bison, chicken, salmon or lamb, so venison was our protein of last resort. :) And potatoes give him gas (very common according to my vets), so he can't have Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potatoes.

Good luck with your search.

Laurie and Oscar
potatoes and sweet potatoes are not from the same family are they?
Kerry, it is Canadain but I have been told you can find it in the states. I get mine in petland. Smaller pet stores carry it also but they are always running out there business has over tripled since the dog food scare.
Itchies yuck!!!!!!!!
I have two of my dogs on Royal Canin Fish and Potato for the allergies
You can not get that anywhere but, at a vets office
My other younger dogs are on Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach (it is salmon based food...no wheat, corn or soy)
Nature's Recipe as mentioned is an awesome food as well...
Good Luck!!!
I would highly recommend the Eagle Pack Holisitic stuff. They have Duck, Venison, heck a lot of different varieties with all the probiotics, prebiotics everything you want in it without adding any supplements. The holilistic variety is made for dogs with dietry or skin problems to help.

The Holistic stuff is great with sensitive dogs.

Here is the web site to read through and to find someone close to your area if you are interested that supplies the dry food.

If I can get it here, there is someone distributing it in your area AS it is made there and I love the stuff. Of course not for me the pooches :P

If your dog has alleriges, all the foods in the world won't make a difference if it contain the component that the dog is allergic to. It could be rice, or grain, or anything in it.

You need to find a food that has the minimum ingredients, and start form there. Whether it is a vet food, or high protein, or high quality you need to see what the food contains. If it has a bunch of stuff in it your dog could be reacting to any of them.

We put Dixie on First Mate, Hypoallergenic. It basically has 4 ingredients...fish, potatoe, beet pulp and chicken fat. No grains, rice, corn, beef, or anything else. Very plain....This what finally worked for her when we made sure that she got NOTHING else. Treats were veggies and veggie cookies with no grains, wheat, rice etc...But the food is very smelly so she would work very hard for a bit of kibble!.

It is a Canadian food that is being expended into the states and other conuntries. They also deliver for free. We tried it and Dixie finally turned around....She had been on the Royal Canin purchased at the vets...but didn't do as well. I can't find an ingredient list for Royal Canine Fish and Potaoe.
Eukanuba FP (fish and potato) or Purina HA formula (hypoallergenic), Hill's ZD or ZD ultra.

No, I know that. I was just hoping that some people who had dogs with the itchies give advice as to what worked for them. It seems some dogs are allergic to similar things, ie wheat or chicken or whatever, so I was just trying to get an idea as to what worked for others.

Jill--i can't remember what food we started him on as his first adult food. Then we switched him to Beneful Chicken and rice, I believe. Then we switched to kirkland lamb and rice, which I know isn't the best food, so that's another reason I'm looking for something else to give him.
I have a friend here who's dog was alergic to every thing... the put him on science diet z/d vets only WORKED WONDERFUL. And this little guy was raw from all his scratching.
We added 2 grams of fish oil per day to Mulligan's diet and it seems to have pretty much ended his constant scratching of his shoulder blades. He still scratches a few times per day, but it's not prolonged and it is different areas. Like he has a few normal itches.

It took a long time for the oil to work if indeed that's what did the trick. Several months, but it does seem to have worked.

We haven't changed his food or anything else we can point to, except shampoo. Since last summer we have been using "Stazko's Soothing Oatmeal Shampoo" hypoallergenic formula , detergent and soap free. It is highly concentrated, you mix 7 water to 1 shampoo. We picked it up at Cherrybrook at the New England Old English Sheepdog CLUB specialty.

I have their web address from the jug:

Here's the product:

Good luck. Itchy dogs seem miserable....

PS Joan says she thinks it was the shampoo. So it was likely one or the other. We're still using the fish oil and the shampoo.
We've been feeding Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large and Giant Breed for awhile now. Not only has it helped my sister's extremely allergic Golden Retriever, it's been good for Nelson's sensitive tummy.

If you have a Pet Supplies Plus store in your area, that's the best place to buy it. You can go to their site and find the closest store in your area. http://www.eaglepack.com/
We're on Science Diet Z/D ultra and it's the only time in Yuki's life she hasn't been eating her butt. She's starting to scratch a little right now, but it is far from obsessive like it used to be...and she's been on this a solid year w/no problems.

Mr. J has mentioned changing food (not sure his reasoning) ...but if we did, I think I may try lisaoes' recommendation.

We've tried everything else (except for the fish oil) with no success.
Thanks everyone! I found several places that sell Eagle around here so I might try that, or one of the other suggestions.

I've been adding a fish oil pill to Barn's food each day, but I've only been doing that for about 2 months now, so maybe it hasn't had time to work its magic yet. I've also been giving him benedryl, but that doesn't seem to do much either. Really, the only thing that stops him itching so far has been the cortisone shot, and we can't do that very often. I'd much rather find the cause and eliminate it.

He seems absolutely miserable today. I decided to take off his cone for the whole day and just let him lick/scratch/bite and see if maybe being able to reach all the spots and get a good scratch in would get it out of his system and stop him from itching, but he's gone into his trance several times and his belly is now all red. It's just so sad. And I try to stop him and distract him and he just gives me his sad eyes. :(
I feed Natural Balance fish and sweet potato, I also had a problem with Elliott itching and licking his paws. I found a thread on the forum about this supplement called Skin-eeze. I actually got it from a forum member, what a difference, it actually works. Its a little pricey, but it works and beats all the visits to the vet.
I tried the holistic eagle pack duck and oatmeal. I have had great results with this. Obe has a sensitive stomach, no problems that or skin (itching). Other than the occasional scratch. Hope this helps.
I give George a tablet every day to stop his skin itching and they have been brilliant!

They are Vetzyme dry skin tablets. Not sure if you get them in the US but if not I'd be happy to mail some over to you.
I just read the ingredients on Eagle pack food and it has corn as one of the main ingredients. I am switching to Blue Buffalo. Mine are on Canidae right now, but I want to see if this one will with help with the gas. I was told Canidae could be kind of gas producing on some dogs. I just stay away from corn, wheat, soy, glutens of any kind, and Vitamin K additive.

This is how the food recall drove me crazy!

Eagle Pack Holistic Select is the one that shon is recommending and there's no corn or additives in that line. Regular Eagle Pack may have corn or other additives.
OK...I didn't read all the different types...I think that was the large breed type...not the select.
Just a quick update:

It's been a few weeks since switching Barn Dog's food and I *think* he *may* be a little better! He does still lick and itch and scratch but not for as long and it doesn't seem like it's as life or death to him as it was before. So hopefully this will work...
Yippee!
That is good news.
:D :D :D
