dog positions in the pack change regularlly and witht he situation- much of what has been used to justfy training methods is based on the myth of one dominant dog. |

I agree 100%. A dog that is a resource guarder, that growls and chases other dogs away from his food, is often NOT an alpha type at all. Many times the alpha dogs will let the other dogs eat first...like (although I do hate to compare) in a wold pack the males let the nursing females and the pups eat first. |

I totally agree with both of you based on what I witness on a regular basis between my Akita, Terrier, and OES-Abi. This logic can be taken a step further and sometimes a breed's temperment can vary from dog to dog given their learned experience from their environment as a littermate, then as a member of a new pack |
That does make sense.. Dakota is the one that growls and carrys on whenever one of them trys to get her food. And Sami and her let Blue eat first and he is the baby 8 months old(biggest but the youngest) I just never noticed before that they did this, I'm usually busy doing other stuff with them getting bigger I moved their dishs to my laundry room(back Door) area to get them out of the way and I noticed this when I was doing laundry. This pack just amazes me every time all new first time with more then 1 dog. |
I agree....
In my "pack"...Pearl has always been Alpha...but as she is aging, I see Heart, more than Cos, trying to "confront" Pearl's authority at every turn. I have always assumed that since Heart is younger and stronger and came into the pack with an Alpha personality there would be conflict as she,Heart, matured. Whenever there is a struggle for the top-dog position, we, my husband and I, reinforce through words and actions that we look to Pearl as Alpha. Pearl always is allowed to eat first, drink first...she goes outside first and is allowed on the couch first. If Heart is on the couch and Pearl wants to come on, Heart must get down. I don't know if what we are doing helps Pearl maintain her Alpha status but it does seem to be working for us..... |
Sami is the couch QUEEN, Blue is never on the couch if Sami is and if he is, he gets down when she is up. That goes for the bed to Blue never gets up. only a fast cuddle at bed 5 mins.... and in the morning to get us UP |
