A New Annoying Habit

Hi all, I have been reading and learning from this forum for several months and have found there isn't much my 15-month old Toby has invented in the way of sheepie behavior -- from napping in the bathtub to eating light bulbs (I think they're part goat), somebody's been there, got the t-shirt. I have learned so much, and particularly memorized the bits about doggy CPR, how to induce vomiting, what to do when (not if!) he swallows glass, etc., etc. You get the picture!

One thing I haven't seen addressed is what to do (if anything) about that particularly doggie activity known as HUMPING! We have a male 10-yo retriever mix, Alex, gentle as a lamb, a 3-yo border collie, Molly, who is the boss of him, and the aforementioned sheepie. Molly has humped Alex forever and now Toby is joining the action -- he humps Alex's head!!! They're all neutered and I realize they know not what they do -- fortunately they only do it to each other and not to uprights. But it is rather embarrassing when they start in on each other when visitors are around. And it's always when they're in the midst of a rollicking play session and they're always picking on Alex (Molly won't stand for it when Toby tries it on her, even though she's 50 lbs lighter). Any suggestions??

Susan, OMG how funny, I don't have this problem ( Chauncey has only air humped a few times ) and I can't offer any help, just wanted to thank you for a great laugh    Now I have to go clean the diet coke off my screen. :D :D

I have 4 oes and I occasionally see some humping, but only from the females. I know its weird. Usually I see when they are getting ready to mount and it might be on the head or from behind, I immediatly stop it as best I can. They look at me like I invaded their privacy, almost a guilty look. I keep telling them they will grow hair on ther paws  8O. So far mine have only done it at home. But I'm sure it is a dominant thing.
Or go blind  :D
It's a dominance thing. Neutering or gender doesn't seem to make a difference. It freaked out my kids when they were teens, though. I have found that it goes on as long as the one underneath puts up with it. BTW, with my current group of 3 OES (2 males, 1 female), there is no particular one who does this to any one else in particular. Sometimes it seems to be specifically to put someone in his/her place, but honestly, sometimes it just seems random.

What they found worse was when Merlin and Archie would ...ahhhh.. groom each other--intimately. Simultaneously. In the front yard. Occasionally stopping a car or two. None of my current crew seems to engage in this behavior with each other. Archie and Sherman don't even seem to groom themselves all that often.
Welcome to the forum!

I don't think that 5 months after joining is a record, but it is up there in terms of delay between registering and posting! :D

Good luck with "The Issue" and welcome again.
Thank you so much for the laugh. My friend has four labs one the oldest humps anything including vacum cleaners, kids toys, people, the pool pump. She has never been able to break him of this habit

I didn't realize there were so many closet sheepdog perverts.

I never dealt with the humping issues until the youngest crew. Mace used to hump Sybil - clearly a dominance issue. It's Che that worries me. At least a few times a week I turn around and he's humping Sybil. Worse, she's just standing there with a big foolish grin on her face. I suppose it is a dominance issue - certainly he wouldn't try it with any of his other female relatives or I expect they'd rearrange his face, but Sybil adores him and will put up with anything - yet deep down I can't help but think he is a perv. He is neutered, for the record. Figures. I've never seen an intact male behave so idiotically for no good reason.

It's a quick "get off her" and he gives me a little grin but always obeys immediately. I was on the phone with my vet one night when I gave the command and she warned me not to be calling her hysterically one night if they end up tied (though frankly I don't think Che has that much of a clue). But her comment reminded me of when I was housesitting for some friends years ago. One of their English Setters came into season and ended up tied with their neutered Chow mix. Not knowing what the heck was going on or if they would untie on their own  fortunately I called and checked with someone before I began the interesting process of trying to load the two of them in my car to rush them to the vet

Okay now I hae to clean off my monitor
OMG, thanks for some great laughs! We also have the "grooming" issue -- Molly loves to lie flat on her back with all her naughty bits out there for the whole world to partake of, and partake he does. Funnily enough, Toby doesn't even lift his leg and seems to have no interest in marking, whereas Alex practically kills himself to get to wherever another dog is peeing so he can pee over the spot for himself. He has actually peed on Toby when he has taken too long! Gotta love 'em!
Merlin used to hump the Chow's head all the time...she would look at me like "mom please stop him 8O " He also had a stuffed monkey that he would hump(ironically it was the same color as the chow  )...the kids started calling the monkey "humpme monkey" lol gotta love theses sheepies!
Our prior dog knew that he was at the bottom of pack and would try to hump any child that sat on the floor. He was desparate to establish dominance over someone. We would forewarn visitors not to let the kids sit on the floor or Ranger would try to "hug them".
Phoebe looooves to let other dogs smell her. She'll lift her leg so they can get a better whiff.

I think that is a sign of nerves or being overly submissive or something - I know I have seen reference to it somewhere.
