Joined the Wellness Center

I work for a hospital that has a state-of-the-art wellness center. It's basically free for employees (if you go 25 times per quarter, you get reimbursed and it's only $40 a month). I really have no excuse not to join since there are a variety of classes--I've already done yoga and NIA which was a LOT of fun. They also offer Zumba but not at a convenient time. Whatever equipment you want, they got, along with trainers to help you. A swimming pool, sauna, steambath, whirlpool. Custom wood lockers with keypad (no locks), hairdryers, thick towels, etc. I figure if nothing else, I can sit in the whirlpool, then have a schvitz (hey, I'm honorary Jewish, I can use that word!).

I'm dying to try the elliptical and my barn friend is going to show me the ropes about spinning.

So maybe my butt won't be so fat in a few months!

Yes darlink! You are an offical Jew! I declare it so!

Go for it, Paula!!!! I never in a million years thought I would exercise regularly...and look at me now!

You really can do it! And believe me....exercise has made all the difference in my weight lost odessey!

I am always here for you!
woo hoo....go for it Paula!!

You work down at Delnor, right? Melissa and I used to work out at a similar place affiliated with a hospital. I really liked it because it attracted all kinds of people and didn't look like a Bally's commercial. Which made me comfortable, since I don't look like a Bally's commercial

Okay, you must kvetch to others while in the whirlpool.
That's fantastic that you signed up. Sounds like a good deal.
Yeah Paula! Good for you! I hope you really enjoy it.

Oh, what's an NIA class?
NIA=Neuromuscular Integrative Action. Kinda free form dance movement that is "New Age." It's very spontaneous and unstructured and for me, a librarian who leaves nothing to chance, very different. But enjoyable. Done in bare feet or socks. Actually quite aerobic.

Amanda, yeah, it's Delnor. Totally UN-Bally's. Not a "meet/meat market" at all. In fact, that attitutde is discouraged. Most people do NOT look like a Bally's commercial, thank goodness!
That's how my health club is too. Its part of Lake Forest Hospital, and a gorgeous club, but the people working out there are truly there to work out and not to get a date.

About fell out of my chair.........that was a term I haven't heard for awhile. Growing up in a Jewish neighborhood.....many terms I don't hear any more.

Am sitting here bemoaning my very testy computer........I haven't a clue all wrong.......instead I should get dressed and head for the gym for a swim and schvitz!! (shhhh, don't tell my blood pressure)
That place sounds perfect, Paula! GO!! :D

Okay, for those of us who didn't grow up in a Jewish neighborhood, what does schvitz mean? :?
Schvitz = sweat v. as in: I went to the steambath to "schvitz" out my toxins.

Also v. as in: Oy! I cooked so much chicken soup, I had to wrap a schmotta (rag) around my neck to catch my schvitz!

Nia is a great workout! It's based on dance, healing and
martial arts. The wonderful thing is for each dance routine
you can workout at 3 different levels. The begining is level 1.
You adjust your movement by making your dance movements
smaller or larger. The music is often ethnic like african drumming.

Paula, what a wonderful opportunity for you. The wellness center
sounds really neat. Have fun with Nia and if you get a chance
try Zumba ! It's nice they have so many options, it will make
exercise fun.

I have an excellent article on pilates for horseback riding if
you are interested.

Have fun at the wellness center!
Zahra, I'd be interested in that article. And yes, NIA is quite the workout!

You shouldn't subject your PB to such abuse such as a hot tub, sauna or steam room. Shhhh

I can "justify" my actions:

Hot tub to ease pain in shoulders after swimming.

Steam room to add good warm moisture to my dry lungs....especially nice with a dab of Vick's Vapor Rub under the nose.

Sauna to dry my hair ....or at least dry spots on me hard to reach. The trick here is to stay in just long enough to do the job and not get so hot as to sweat thus requiring another shower.
Here is the pilates for riding article--

Paula,

There are more excellent articles at www.riderpilates.com at
the articles link. Dr Glosten is a Dressage rider who uses
pilates for core strength and posture.

Wish she would write a book! There is a wealth of info
at her site.

Enjoy!
