Is this good or bad?

So Suzi is really fast. She runs like the wind. I never really thought anything of it before.
Last night, the dogs were out in the yard, just hanging out like normal. When I look outside again Suzi is running the fence line at breakneck speed with Toby right behind her. They love to chase each other so the only thing I really think is, "Look at them go!" Well I bend down to pick something up and look outside again and they are down in the far corner of the yard, noses down, poking around and very intent on whatever is there. I wonder what could be so interesting so I call for them to come in and Suzi lifts her head up and there is something huge hanging from her mouth! I yell for her to drop it, which she does but neither of them really seem too intent on coming in the house. With sad little looks, they come jogging in.
Suzi has blood on her muzzle and down her leg. It's just on the surface of the fur so it cleans up easily. I put the dogs away and go down to see what the damage is. Turns out there is a rabbit down there with some nice puncture holes! Up the fenceline there's a medium sized branch lying perpenicular to the fence with a tuft of rabbit fur on it. Looks like bunny was doing well until he tried to clear the branch, caught himself a bit and Suzi caught up to him.

The funny thing (if you can call it that) about the whole thing is that when the dogs were down in the corner after their run, they looked like they were poking at something with their paws. It's like they were saying, okay little guy, we got you now go again!

Depends on your perspective. If you're a rabbit, probably a bad thing

I'd be kind of impressed, and grossed out, all in one. High prey drive - I like that. Not so soft mouth - eh, maybe warn the tester if you have her herding instinct tested...

There is, supposedly, some sighthound in the mix behind our dogs. UC Davis did a study a few years back. I can never find a citation, but a dog belonging to one of our top performance people was part of the study and that's what they told her.

Have you considered lurecoursing?

I was actually thinking about lure coursing while working on scheduling Suzi and Toby's herding instinct test! How ironic!

You should!

(and did that thought cross your mind before or after the bunnicide? )

They offer it for fun following a herding trial semi-locally. It's a lot of fun. and some of the OES who participate really excel. An uncle of Kerry's Marley, in particular, is just incredible. You can tell he loves it.

Funny - I've been thinking about getting my youngest instinct tested as soon as it thaws. Is it a spring thing, or is it just because Easter is coming up that our thoughts turn to lambs?

(and Suzi's to bunnies....? )

It was after the bunnicide that I was thinking of lure coursing but I've been trying to coordinate the herding instinct test for over a year now. Schedules never seem to work out. Hopefully I'll get it done shortly. The herding people are Aussie people and their schedule keeps getting filled up with other Aussies before we can get in. D'oh!!

Does anyone know any sites that have a lure coursing schedule for those back east? I just started searching but haven't hit anything exciting yet.
The lure coursing is fun. Even Simon did it!!!   Really - he did!!
Can MO come play?? She no longer has "wabbits" to chase........coyotes have finished them off. The only time she caught one she held it down "now what do I do??"

Yes, sheepies can be very fast......I'm amazed at how fast MO moves for an 8 or 9 year old. Only recently have the dogs next door begun to beat her on the fence run........they are from 2-4 years old.

If you are open to going a little further a field we did our herding test in PA wasn't too hard to schedule. ALso we are working with a new herding instructor in NJ who doesn't doesn't start with the test - if you are interested.

On another subject Morgan's Xharness came so now I need to find tiem to start some drafting exercises - if I get poles for my garden wagon he may be helping with spring clean up!
