I don't mean to burst your bubble, but any breeder who would sell to a pet store is not a reputable breeder, so please be careful..... you may be supporting a puppy mill by buying a pup from a pet store, and also, without knowing the background of the parents etc you may be walking into a whole lot of health, temperment problems.
If you do decide to, at least this pup is with you, someone who is dedicated and knowledgeable, and at least it won't end up given up or abandoned as it might with someone not so experienced or caring. Just be forewarned... you might get lucky and everything may go fine, but you may not, and you need to be prepared for that very real possibility. Also, pet stores often have pups with viruses, parasites and infections, and even if the pup shows no symptoms, it can be heartbreaking to bring that pup home, and discover it is hosting a deadly coccidiosis that may also make Walter sick.
I agree that you don't know where this pup came from. They probably will not tell you. Find out if the pet gives 2 yr health gaurantee, the one in our city does, and they have the pups come from small families...no big breeding pet mill set ups. They do screen the sellers, also the local shelter SPCA does a weekly check on the pet store. They pass.

The have a health gaurantee, neuter/spay contracts/shots and socializing in the store. The big problem with pet store puppies, will be house breaking...use to eliminating inside the den. And the age of pup when it arrives, usually younger than they should be to maintain that cuteness...they lose out on important mom to pup learning, and pup to pup learning that happens 7-8 week age.
Go back to the pet store and ask the name of the puppy's kennel. There will more then likely be we don't know. Ask if the dog's papers will come with him if you buy this puppy. If there are no papers available and if they come after you bought the puppy look out sounds like a major puppy mill. Tell them you want the names of the puppy's parents so you can check and see if they had their hip tests done and what are the results there is a sight for this you need the dogs ID which is given at birth when the litter is registered with the AKC.
sigh.... yes yes i know the perils of pet stores. but when the cutest little sheepdog pup in the world is being waved in front of my face i lose all rationality.

my mom nixed the idea today, but they thought long and hard about it which was the first step in getting walter. i think im going to start "accidently" leaving petfinder open to cute sheepdogs that need to be adopted.

i was so close!
Hi Heather:

I'm sorry you didn't get that sheepdog puppy. We got our second sheepie this summer from NEOESR and Baxter couldn't be happier. They do play extremely roughly (think All-Star wrestling) and you have to be able to move quickly out of the way once they get started but boy is it fun!

By the way - Cassiopia was originally from a pet store. And yes, she does have a few issues, but nothing that can't be solved with training. And since you've been through them all with Walter - I think that you could handle most anything that came up.

Good luck in getting a new addition to the family.

Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia & Sharkey
Heather, will the next pup be Charlie???
Heather,

Please think of all you've gone through with Walter and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't get a puppy from a Petstore! The best way to avoid having to make this decision is DON'T STEP INTO A PETSTORE THAT SELLS LIVE ANIMALS!

You will not be SAVING a puppy by buying one from a Petstore - they will just fill his cage with another - and this perpetuates the puppy mill problems.

I know it's heartbreaking - but think about all the dogs who suffer in puppy mills producing litter after litter to fill the cages of these petstores!
It would be even more heartbreaking for your family to have to deal with the illnesses / temperment problems this puppy is likely to suffer from!

JMHO.

I have to admit when I was ALOT younger I bought my 1st dog from a pet store. He was also my 1st collie Rocky. He was my best buddy in every way,and I miss him even after 8yrs of him being gone.HOWEVER he had ALOT of health problems. When he was apuppy he had HUGE hot spots ALL his body.He was allergic to EVERYTHING!!That was easy to fix I switched him to Nutro lamd and rice.He was in alot of pain from those hot spots, but that wasnt the end of it tho. When he was 5 he started having sezures :( .We did every test and everything came up "normal".So it was determined he had epileposy *sp?The seziures got really bad,it was heart breaking for me,during his serziures Id have to yell his name to get him to come out of them.Fearing Id loose him I didnt care how loud I had to scream, finally hed come out of it,hed be so wobbly, and his eyes would be so distint,Id have to literlly pick up this 80lbs collie to go outside cuz hed loose control of his bodily function. This was very heartbreaking for me.

Now having Jagger knowing he was a from a puppy mill,Im blessed to have him,I dont know what his future holds w/ his leg.(in the pic of jagger over in pictures look at his right front leg see where it was broken and not fixed?)The facts are I love him very much, and wouldnt change anything about him.I do wish however puppy mills woulod ALL get closed down, but I know thats a dream of mine.Knowing what I know now i wouldnt adopt a puppy from a puppy store, and thats sad too me....Good luck in your decissions

Unforuntately, papers do not mean a thing. :(

Many, many, many backyard breeders that sell to pet stores have AKC papers. ....and their dogs have terrible disposition, weened entirely too early, and horrible health problems. One of the biggest scams in the new puppy owner world is fooling you into believing that papers = quality papers.
