how old does a female oes has to be when going in heat?

| Welcome to the OES forum....I an no expert, but here is my 2 cents...
I think it depends on when the mother, aunts, sisters went into heat. My OES, Heart  was spayed last week. My breeder emailed me and all the other females in the litter ( the dogs, not the humans..  ) and said her female pup from the same litter, looked like she was going into in heat soon, so if we were going to spay..."nows the time"...
( I was thinking of showing her, but in the end decided I wasn't up to it at this time.) So, you may want to contact your breeder..she may have some ideas....those breeders are VERY knowlegable and they know their dogs!!!! I am sure you will get alot of replies to this from the experts on this forum.... Good Luck!!!!! |
| I am unable to do that since the dog was a gift from my son before he left for Iraq and he got her from a rescue but I don't know which, some place state side.
Does anyone else have any ideas? I am desperate the vet is not very helpful. |
| I was told before but not sure that bigger breed dogs usually go into heat at 10 months. Not sure if true? I got my girl fixed at 9 months also, I did not want any males jumping my fence. My male being fixed at also 9 months... a female dog the other day trying to get into my yard, with Blue barking and looked like, come on in baby and Sami.... carrying on with YOU better not come into this YARD. Fun day and can not wait till the end of March. |
| Summer is 8 months old now and no season yet. My yorkie has just been on heat and I was hoping Summer would follow but she didnt. I have got a horrid feeling she will wait until 21st March when we are going on holiday! I shall have to get her some knickers! |
| larger breeds mature later. While a small breed might mature at 5-6 month, our sheepers usually wait until 9+ months. I've had one who checked in at 7 months.....the little stinker. Average......would be interesting to run the numbers...........but I suspect average 9-11 months is about right with some waiting until past their first birthday.
The first heat may be minor so you might miss it. Of course my early bloomer was also the messiest.......there was no missing it. Having her spayed during heat is more dangerous as the area is engorged and bleeding during surgery is more pronounced. Also if she is pregnant and spayed, it too is more dangerous. If you can get her past the cycle, wait an extra month then then have her done, otherwise you should be looking at having her done soon. |
| I was asking my vet about this only yesterday and they recommended to us that Poppy has her first season, wait 12 weeks and then have her spayed. They said research showed that there was less liklihood of any incontinence problems if we waitied until after the first season.
Has anyone heard of this reasoning before? |
| that is definitly the new research. It goes along with waiting longer to castrate the boys as well due to growth issues. |
| Yup - that's (new?) conventional wisdom.
The benefit of spaying before their first heat is the risk of mammary cancer goes down to almost nothing. The disadvantage is the higher risk of incontinence, and if you look at the results from OESCA's last health survey, that is one of the number one problems afflicting this breed, so... Kristine |
