I just bought an OES. WE have had him for two weeks. He is about ten and a half weeks old. He is the hugest clown and we love him already! However, potty training has been rather tedious. We are finding that he pees on the floor because he knows if he does it he gets to go outside. He also does it when he is mad at us to get even. I have tried the puppy pads(he just chews them up), have tried rubbing his nose in it. He knows that he needs to pee outside He just doesn't know how to tell us. An ideas? Thanks, Lisa |

Hi Lisa,
I am no guru on the subject, but the phrase "Crate Training" seems to come up very frequently with this subject. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=35 ... aining#358 At that link they refer to operationkindness.org. I will also ask another member or two to share their recent experiences. Good luck! -Ron. |
hi, i just went through all of this a few months ago. now, i have an angel that holds it until i get home...whenever that may be. first of all, get a crate. have your puppy in the crate at all times that he is unsupervised. a sample schedule goes as follows. wake up, feed/water... then very shortly after, take him out on leash to the place you want him to go. tell him " go potty" or whatever words you want to use...when he does it, praise him like you've never praised before! and even give a treat. then, play for a while and put him back in the crate for a nap. roughly about every 4 hours or so he will need to go out. make sure you regulate food and water at first. it may take up to 5-6 months to get him trained. when he goes in the house, put his leash on and have him next to you as you fuss ( not yell, but act unhappy) and clean it up. make it unpleasant with your tone of voice. if it is a #2, take him and it outside and put the poop where you want it. show him where you want it to be. he will eventually get the point. after this is done, do NOT stay angry...let him know that you love him. he will pee in the house again...this is part of having a puppy. make sure to NOT fuss him when he pees because he is over excited or showing submission as in front of another dog, etc. also, use a product like nature's miracle to eliminate the smell so he won't go there again. he will get the drift, it just takes time, remember, he's a baby...the trainer that i take my dog to told me that a dogs age in months is like a childs age in years...ie: 2 month old dog, is like a 2 year old child...hang in there and you will soon have a wonderful best friend! |
