Breeder Information

Does anyone know about this breeder I am providing a link to?

If so email me privately at lhall15@bellsouth.net

I have a deposit for a new litter to be born at the end of this month and am concerned about the blue eyes since I have been reading on this forum. Thank you

The blue eyes would really be the least of my concerns if I were in your position. At the bare minimum, I'd want to see hip and eye certifications for the parents. Can she provide that? My other concern is that she doesn't appear to be a member of the Old English Sheepdog Club of America, which would keep her on top of other health issues (and other issues) associated with breeding OES. For a someone who considers themselves a responsible breeder, it's a small, easy thing to do that would help her a lot in learning. Finally, it appears that none of her dogs have been shown, which means that they've never been evaluated for soundness. Showing's a lot more than a beauty contest. The breed standard is in place to prevent health issues as well as cosmetic things.

I'm not posting this to burst your bubble, only to raise awareness. I didn't know any of this stuff when I got my OES and I know now what I want in a breeder/dog when I get another one. It's a lot of money and an investment of 10 to 12 years of your life so you want to try to get the best, healthiest pup that you can. Don't sell yourself short. Even if this pup doesn't work out, you may have to wait a little while but it'll be well worth it. It's great that you're asking these questions now and we're happy to help!
Thanks...at this moment I think I may loose my $200.00 not to mention I was so excited to think I would have a puppy by May. Everything you say has come true with Rosie...we paid alot for her and her mother and father were tt showdogs. The only reason they sold her to me at 6 months is she had anxiety issues and I'm sure after one dog show they decided to sell her to me. She was 6 months old and the first week we were beside ourselves...high anxiety when you left her and when she saw any other dog besides my OES. She is 8 now, loving but still high anxiety around others until she has time to settle down. She has been really healthy and I'm sure her breeding has alot to do with that. Again, thanks so much for the advice.
I would much rather walk away from $200.00 than spend that dog's lifetime worrying. Good breeding is no guarentee but it helps you sleep better at night!
Just curious...what does it mean to be AKC registered for the breeder? And, is that verifyable for us commoners who just want to know -I'm not in the "in crowd" with the connections? Is there a link?

A breeder can't be AKC registered, only a dog can

We have one local backyard breeder who advertises that she is a member of the AKC, which isn't possible either. Individuals cannot be members of the AKC - only a club can be a member, so to speak.

Some day we should put together a list of what the various terms you see used to advertise a litter mean, which ones have no bearing on reality, and which ones (or their absence) are major red flags.

I had "fun" going over some ads at a disreputable puppy selling website a while back. The fantasies some of these people came up with. My favorite scenario: Sire AKC registered, dam not, no CHs in pedigree, but puppies were all magically show quality. Huh?  I don't even know why they bothered with the show aspect. Not one of them had offered a lick of health information beyond promises of health guarantees. OK, that's nice, but where's testing?

It seems so obvious to me now, but you're right, this stuff isn't intuitive. Says she whose first (BYB) OES came out of a cow barn. Literally

Kristine
A reputable breeder will brag about the health clearances on the sire and dam, she doesn't even mention it. She also gives a two year health guarantee but for what? And don't be fooled by the statement that the litter will be AKC registered, that means nothing.
I would like to say that yes, if you are in the USA being a member of OESCA or HAVE BEEN, as we lost a LOT of good members over the past 10 years due to the politics should be a big first question..........

but with that said, People from Canada have OESOCC, and there are many different breed clubs in England and Europe and Australia and New Zealand....

And I am sure there ae other breed clubs that we dont even know about really.........

So i think, that we need to say "Is a member of their countries PARENT BREED CLUB" and has health clearances...... eyes, hips and thyroid clearances **ALL** before breeding their dam or boy......

I would also be very leary of anyone that BREEDS a dog that DOES NOT HAVE IT's CHAMPIONSHIP!! Especially in todays day and age....... There is NO REASON to not have completed a championship unless there is a justifiable reason.... Otherwise that person is just prostituting their bitch or dog out to make money....... plane and simple.
Ditto to what Ali said, be aware and buy right and hopefully you will have years and years of sheepie good health and love.
