Snow Capped
I am new to OES's and will be getting my first OES in june. The more I read this forum and the more I read about these dogs the more I love them. |

I believe snowcapped generally means the OES has a white head . . . I'm not sure if the eye color is included. However, the word sends a couple red flags my way. I have never heard a reputable breeder use the term "snowcapped" but I have noticed that many un-reputable breeders like this term a lot, and may even charge more for an OES with this feature . . . 
Congratulations on looking into this breed! I would advise you to head out to a show and meet with an OES enthusiast that can give you some pointers about what to look for in the breed as well as point you in the right direction for healthy pups.  |
| It means the dogs head and shoulder area is white. Eye color isn't part of the description. My first sheepie was a snowcap, so I'm a bit partial. HOWEVER, please know that an OES snowcap with blue eye's may have a higher genetic tendency toward deafness. |

Gabriel is a whitehead with one blue, one brown eye as well.

Miss Ellie is a wal eye too. The only problem with her hearing is it's selective, more so when it's my voice she's hearing (or not).  |
| Selective hearing? For a while we thought that Bella was partially deaf. We would give her a command, even on leash, and she would go on about her merry business like she did not hear. We were on the verge of going to the vet when we noticed that even up stairs out of sight when the treat jar opened she appeared like magic. I don't think her white head is what affects her hearing. I think it's what's between her ears that affects her hearing.

Years ago NYS rescue got a blue-eyed, all white (except for one small gray target spot on his butt) 10 mos old boy in who was given up because he was deaf and his owners didn't want to be bothered trying to train a deaf dog. So as I'm transporting this dog (Bear was his name) down the thruway I'm chiding myself for chatting to him anyway - he couldn't hear me - duh! And, of course, he never reacted to my voice. It was a long drive so I opted to eat as I was driving, all the while glancing in the rear view mirror to make sure my passenger was doing OK. I started to notice this funny thing every time my potato chip bag crackled. Even though he was standing with his back to me, staring out the rear window, his ears twitched at the crackle.
I thought I was imagining things, but I reported it to Madeline anyhow. She had him BAER tested and his hearing was just fine. Diagnosis: the worst case of selective hearing the breed has ever seen <maybe>
His new family renamed him JD for Juvenile Delinquent and marched him off to obedience class where his hearing was magically restored.  |

According to BAER, Bear's hearing was there? It was here, there and everywhere. In fact, it was everywhere except when you said "Bear, here!" At which point Bear decided he couldn't hear. He did not even hear when you called him for his fare. Didn't matter far nor near, standing still or on a tear, Bear said he could not hear. But that was until BAER. And then his new owners straightened out Bear's gray spotted rear. All using positive reinforcement, of course. Rumors that they trained him using potato chips are just that - rumors. I hate Mondays.
