Constant potty problems

Are OES just prone to runny potty? My 1 1/2 yr. old, Sammy, seems to always have problems and then a big old messy bottom. After spending over $300 two weeks ago and being on Flagyl for a week, Sammy's tests came back normal. I haven't switched food and I don't give him any people food other than the rice and cottage cheese that he gets when things are runnier than usual. I've switched to charcoal doggy cookies and that seems to help, but now instead of green soft potty, we have black soft potty staining our walkway where Sammy insists on going. When I took Sam to the vet for the testing and weighing for meds, she shaved his butt and now he has a comb-over which has made clean-up for me disappear! I'm going to the health food store today to buy some flax seed to add to Sam's food, but if anybody has any other ideas, I'd sure appreciate them.

Maybe you should switch food, that could be part of the problem.
I though about switching food, but he's already on the Canadae lamb and rice; is there another food available at non-vet places that would be easier on him?
Sometimes it's an annoying trial and error process. Canidae was a bit rich for my boys and they can eat anything (it wasn't horrible but it did make them looser). My old girl eats canned Canidae and does great on it though. You have tons of other options. Some easy ones to get should be Wellness, Nutro Ultra, Eagle Pack and I know there are others that are pretty decent food. I think ProPlan even makes a sensitive stomach version and that should be very easily accessible.
My parents's sheepdog had a very delicate constitution, as my dad would say, but Barney so far has a stomach of steel. I would suggest trying different food and seeing if that helps--it doesn't seem like it could hurt much at this point!
You're right, it couldn't hurt at this point, especially with that nice clean shaven butt!

We've been feeding Eagle Pack Holistic Select since the food recall and it's well tolerated by all 6 of my girls. Try the change of food first... gradually switching over.

THAT's what we wondered too... we had recurrent diarrhea for SEVERAL months. I believe we had undiagnosed Giardia which the new vet treated for. Giardia can be VERY difficult to detect even with several stool cultures. If you do a search online for this problem, you'll find this to be true. Panacur might be considered... talk with your vet. A good first step (if the food switch doesn't work) might be to do a stool culture to see if parasites can be excluded as the cause.

There are other causes for recurrent diarrhea but if this parasite has been positively excluded, you might ask about adding a probiotic and digestive enzyme to each meal. It's usually in a powder form and I think it's better than plain yogurt (just my opinion).

You might also ask about doing a trial of Colostrum... there is another person on the forum who's holistic vet said it does help some dogs. The last I heard, it did help. Again, it's often in a powdered form. 3 of mine get it to hopefully help boost the immune system.

Best wishes... I know this is frustrating.
Don't make the same mistake I did EVERYTIME I was trying a new one. Buy the smallest bag even though it is not the cheapest way to go. If not, you end up with a variety of several large bags your sampling, added expense, and months before you know what to do with the brands that don't work for you. Also, switching in itself can make their stools loose. Try to change gradually. Been there...done all of the above. Also, check out the link that rates the different brands.
Very good advice :D

If you need to switch foods before the bag is empty, tape the bag shut and
drop it off at your local shelter if they take this type of donation. We did this
several times
Good idea taking the left-overs to a shelter! I just bought the smallest bag of Nutro for sensitive tummies, so I'll try that. Since we're already having problems, do I do this change gradually like you would in a normal situation, or should I just do the change?
The $300+ that I just spent included every possible test for everything except food allergies and, of course, they all came back negative. I kind of felt like I should get SOMETHING wrong after spending that, but NO.
Ask the vet for a digestive enzyme powder it has the prebiotics and probiotics I am sure it will help.

Try also swapping the dry food, sometimes they can build up an intolerence to a particular brand they have previously been OK with.

Just if you do change brands then do it over at least a fortnight to not upset the system anymore then necessary.

The black stools, well my old girl has a charcoal bikky every day as she suffers from old age wind 8O And yes we have blackies passing through but at least the farts don't smell now.
