Here is my problem - before i got him he got used to pooping and peeing in his crate. Since he arrived, we have been joined at the hip. I take him outside (same place, same routine, same everything), ask him to go potty, he does it then i praise him. But if i don't catch him he just does his business anywhere - in his crate or on the floor, with a blank look on his face. He doesn't seem to have any idea about indicating his need to go outside. I house trained my 2 females in the blink of an eye and it seemed they could also hold it longer. Wilby cannot get through the night without peeing in his crate, even when i take his water away at about 7pm, so i'm asking you - IS THIS A GUY THING? ARE MALES MORE IMMATURE? IS THERE HOPE??? |
I would say it more is a case of his previous life experience than sex of the dog. He had about 4 months to get in the habit of pooping/peeing in his crate. Initially it probably wasn't his choice, but it was all the choice there was. It can be quite the habit to break.
We have mostly male dogs, and never have had difficulties house training. Chewie was 16 weeks when he came to us, and no trouble at all. Now Maggie is another story. She was a rescue, and at 1 year old had never been in a house. She was tied up - peed, pooped and tromped in it. It took months before she even was aware (or so it seemed) that she was going where we didn't want her to. Then a period where she still went, but looked guilty. Then we got little signs - looking restless, a few minutes of pacing before she went. You get the idea! She has been here a year now, and rarely ever has an accident. If she does, it is pee, never poop. Her signs aren't big, but we know what they are now. |
I guess i was just hoping it was a guy thing, rather than breaking some unwanted behaviour, but i'll just keep at it, i have hope and he's such a very sweet boy, i'm sure he'll get it. Right now the only sign he gives is getting up, otherwise he's lounging on his back.
On another subject, i noticed you are involved with therapy dogs. Wilby is so calm and (otherwise well behaved) i think he'd be an ideal candidate, could you point me in the right direction? |
