I too believe that dogs smile. We had a friend who had a dog that would smile on command. First time I saw a dog smile I thought she was getting ready to bite, at first glance it looked like a snarl. |
I think they smile...when Nab comes to bed at night and gets her brushing, she rolls over on her back with all 4 legs straight in the air and a big smile on her furry face. She then does the happy sheepie wiggle dance (I have no other way to describe it!) and jumps up and gives lots of kisses!

Yes, dogs I do believe smile. I think anyone can look at a sheepie and see his/hers sheepie smile. And some sheepies have a little bit more of a goofy smile, ex Jack with his tounge hanging on the side of his mouth, but still smiling.

Don't you think Stormi's avatar shows a smiling OES? |
haha i think thats definitely a smiling sheepdog.
walter never smiles. he does however give me these terribly dirty looks... hes such a little brat. (a cute brat, but a brat nonetheless) |
Technically, if a dog 'smiles' showing teeth it is usually fear, or aggression or both. However, because we humans tend to think it is cute the first time we see it and make a fuss over it, one of two things happen, one the dog learns a new meaning of baring it's teeth, replacing instinct with a human taught trait, or two, the dog learns being aggressive is ok and it escalates from there. |
OES have very strong face expression, and if you are careful, you can learn to recognize their moods. Usually when they are happy, their eyebrows lift on a certain way and their eyes sparkle differently, I guess that can count as a smile. If you make them upset, they will frown and you can actually see that their expression changes. Have you seen the look they give you when they are upset because you took away that tasty shoe and sent them to quiet time? Lennon can look at you and it's scary how clear his emotions are.
I'm amazed to the complexity of emotions dogs can feel, and having Lennon and Sofa has made me appreciate and respect them much more than I could have if we did not have them. I wish there was a way I could teach all the dog owners I know about that. |
When I ask Tyler to give me "Teddies" he rolls onto his back to get his chest and belly rubbed. The longer you do it the more he smiles. His lips pull back and show his pink gums. He does not show his teeth. I think of that as his belly rub smile. I think Saulmr is correct in that they show emotions so clearly that it can sometimes be scary and funny at the same time. The way they move their eyebrows and the way the eyes twinkle, and even some of the grunts and sighs. |
Oh my gosh! I swear that Pirate not only smiles, but actually laughs!!! I have pictures of him laughing ear to ear. Also, he too rolls on his back while getting his belly rubs with a HUGE open mouth smile!!! I wish I knew how to post pictures here, cuz I have one of my sister Nancie and I with Pirate between us...laughing his tush off! HONEST!! Deborah! |
Yes they smile and laugh. Oreo now looks like Mr. Ed with his upper lip curled and showing all his teeth his butt is wiggling and he makes a laughing sound. Our Oliver did it to. They are funny dogs and it takes a little time to get this smile thing working. My sister's sheepie did and strangers thought he was crazed with his teeth showing!!!!! |
Shaggydog,
I think we need some pictures of your adorable Oreo, smiling! That sounds adorable. Stormi and co. |
Hi Stormi, It is hard to get that Mr. Ed face as he is a wigglin' his butt and can't stand still. He does what Deb said Pirate does when on his back his tongue to the side he is grinning. I will keep trying to get a picture he is at that age when he sees the camera he puts his nose on the lens. LOL I'll keep trying. |
I think dogs smile - and kitty cats grin. |
Helen your Avatar makes me smile!!! It's so cute!!!
I really can tell when Panda, Blue or Merlin are beaming and give me a open mouth I'm really happy look...thus smiling. This summer when I took Panda with me on vacation on a remote Island we walked down to the beach the first day. He looked at me and then looked at the vast ocean before him ........I swear he just opened his mouth and smiled. I mean really smiled!!! Yup I believe they smile when happy. Marianne |
Hee hee.... Cats don't grin... They smirk.... Usually at us! Deborah <---who's fighting for control of the computer monitor with Khobi the Siamese cat |
I actually logged on this evening to do a search on this topic. I don’t have a sheep dog, rather a golden retriever mix, but boy does he smile! He smiles just before I feed him, he smiles when he greets me at the door and he smiles when company comes over and coolest of all, he smiles when I smile at him. I truly believe he picked this up from people watching; he associates smiling with being happy. I asked my vet about this and she said that she believes dogs smile when they are happy and thinks my dog is probably the happiest, healthiest dog she’s seen. He has at least two different smiles, the happy smile described above and a nervous smile that he uses when he knows he did something wrong but is sure he’s not in too much trouble (like not sitting at the door before he goes out as he is trained to do) I’ve been trying to watch his smile patterns and so far these are the two types of smiles I’ve identified. |
Yep, they smile and laugh. Here's the picture I promised last Feb of Pirate in full laugh mode: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/d ... ughing.jpg And one more of him laughing after I asked him, why did the chicken cross the road? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/d ... 773c51.jpg Gotta love a dog with personality!!!! |
My boys laugh at me all the time...especially when I'm mad about about something!
Well, at least I USUALLY find it contagious! |
My Aussie Skye smiles especially when you first come home. Nothing aggressive about it. She shakes her tailess butt and looks up adoringly at you with bared teeth like a Cheshire cat grin. I've never seen my Sheepie do it but my brothers dog which was a boxer used to do it also. Mardi I've never seen smile he just bowls you over and kisses you to death and you know he's happy and he cries when he's glad to see you.I really do think they smile and thats what it truly is. |
Deb, I love those pictures...he is smiling.....
Panda doesnt smile, but she does talk and bump into you a lot when you get home...she tells me about her day and how much she missed me.....lol |
Those are cute pictures, Deb! He's a doll! |
We have a Boxer that smiles. She was a foster dog we ended up adopting and that smile is what hooked me!
The first time she did it I thought she was showing her teeth in aggression because I didn't know her that well, that was the third day we had her as a foster. But then each time after that, that is how she greeted me, with a big toothy Boxer grin, lips and nose turned up sort of in a gimmace with all her front teeth gleaming at me. Her body actions are what gave it away, her nubby was wiggling so fast and she was kidney beaning (sideways crablike walk Boxers do when excited or happy) towards me. She has smiled for me ever day since and is the only one of our dogs that will actually smile when happy. I've known many Dalmatians that smile too. |
Daisy, the rescue that I was fostering recently, was a smiler, too. I thought it was adorable! I wish I had gotten a pic! |
my brother has also rescued a dog thats now 7 months old and when shes laying down if you go outside she'll show all her teeth and wrinkle up her face and wag her tail real fast. |
We had a Jack Russell when I was growing up that smiled whenever we came home from a long day away. She would always wag her tail really fast, come close for a good scratch, and smile away! |
