Tonks & Luna, Sick again

Well we went to the vet on Thursday; the girls had diarrhea, and had for about 5 days. I'd given them new heartworm meds, and thought it merely a side effect. But when I told the vet, she wanted me to bring them in right away.

They were running mild fevers in addition to the diarrhea, and Luna was developing a urinary tract infection (again). The vet said she'd seen so may cases of unexplained diarrhea in the past 7 days, that she was watching the internet for another food recall! But she also suggested I keep them out of the dog park for a while; as maybe they picked up some bacteria from there (they drink from puddles and like to eat mud).

Well they put my girls onto a mild antibiotic (for the diarrhea) and Luna on another for her urinary tract infection. And I took them off their food and have been making them boiled chicken with brown rice. Almost immedaitely the diarrhea went away. But now a new problem.

Morning 3 of boiled chicken and rice, and Tonks vomitted up ALL her breakfast, about 4 hours after eating it. I tried to call the vet, but of course they closed 25 mintues earlier. The dogs aren't acting sick; no letheragy. And Tonks is now sniffing around my scrambled eggs, so she seems to have an appetite. I might even make her some eggs....

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Did your vet do a stool sample test for Giardia? It's very easy to pick that up at dog parks as Frank did once, and so did Valerie's girls. It would be easy for them to pass it to each other. There is a specific antiobiotic that helps.
Normally after a vomiting you rest them for 12-24 hours from food. They will pester but you've got the give the tummy a chance to settle back down. Think of the times you vomited....did you want to eat right away?

Weak broth and rice might work, but generally they need to go foodless for awhile.

It could also be the antibiotic that made her nauseous. Keep the water bowls clean and let the girls drink as necessary and ignore their pleading for food.........yeah right. Egg isn't that digestable, but go ahead and try it.

Note that Giardia can be very difficult to diagnose even with several stool cultures. If Giardia is suspected, treatment with Panacur might be what is needed. We never did get a diagnosis... only high levels of bacteria. We had treated with Metronidazole and anti-diarrhea meds REPEATEDLY but the crud kept coming back. Our then "new" vet had just attended a seminar on this and it cured the pack.
thanks everyone! I had some members on this morning's chat suggest Giardia as well; I'll mention it to my vet on Monday and see what she thinks.

In addition; my girls are now acting like they are STARVING. I haven't taken thier food back and Tonks hasn't vomitted since that first time; I've just been giving them boiled rice and chicken at their normal meal times. THEN I had to give them a late night snack around 10pm because of thier "starving" behavior, AND now at 2am they asked to go out (which is wierd) and then came in and were licking thier already clean bowls desperately. Do they just like the chicken and rice that much? Am I not giving them enough? And for that matter, what portions should I be giving them on the chicken and rice? Any help?
Thankfully, we haven't had to feed rice/protein for upset tummies for a couple of years :phew: We mixed 1 part protein with the equivalent of 3 or 4 parts cooked brown rice. We would put it all together and a pot of with right amount of water and cook the raw meat and rice together until done... adding water if needed.

As for the amount, you want to start them out with small meals given a few times a day. You might calculate the calories they were getting in their kibble and the calories in the rice/protein mix to figure an amount.

I'm sure others can share more. I hope you're little ones are better real soon.
Ask your vet about GiardiaVax, it's a series of two shots given two weeks apart and works. I had four of mine have giardia at the same time and that's the only thing that helped. Also, the smell is horrendous and the feces may/may not have a sausage like casing around it. Good luck, I hope they feel better soon.
Oh no! So sorry the girls are sick! Feel better soon, babies!
well... we got a confirmation today on, of all things, tapeworms. Ugh. I guess the regular de-wormer doesn't work on them; they require a special med.
Kaytee arrived with fleas and a tape worm too.
At least now you know :D
This too shall pass
gaaaaaAAAAAH!

woke up this morning and both have green goop inthier left eye.

HOW do they both now have an eye infection?
I'm sorry to hear something else is going one. Multiples... one catches
something and passes it to the other or they come in contact with it at
the same time. Another trip to the vet is in order. :(

It is something to consider if going to doggie daycare and dog parks...
just like with kids in school, some "parents" allow their "kids" to go out in
public sick not even considering who they're spreading an illness to. I
guess I'm a little more sensitive to things like this... my dad's final illness
was shared by a customer who came into the shop sick...

Very true. Usually, without fail, if one of mine get the poops or some other affliction, within days, the other ones have it. My vet is very good about just giving me extra meds so I can just start the other ones on them when they start to show symptoms.
My dogs love chicken and rice. Anytime one of them has to be on it, the others insist on it too.
Sorry to hear your two are unwell again, hopefully all will settle down soon for you and you can enjoy both the puppers without so many problems you have encountered so far.

Worm medication you have to read the label as not all cover all the worms a dog can get.

Keep them away from the dog parks until they are clear of that and also the eye infections. Pick up their stools straight away when they go to make sure no re-infection of the tape worms.
Allison,
I am glad you found the cause of the tummy problems. Glad it's not Giardia.
I also hope the eye infections clear up soon and the girls are feeling better.
