I'm from the Pittsburgh Pa area and plan on purchasing an Old English Sheepdog puppy this summer. Can anyone suggest a breeder in my area? |
|
I don't know of any in that area, but you can contact
http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org/ and they will give you referrals for your area. I hope that helps. Keep us updated when you get your furball. Welcome to the forum! Stormi and co. |
i got my roo from a breeder in NC. I wouldn't mind sharing her info with you. Roofus is everything I wanted and more - if I buy another oes, it will be from her. |
The only thing I can recommend (above and beyond Stormi's reference to the Breeder Referral) is to speak with other owners that have had experience with the breeder for over 1 year at least. Many genetic problems may not arise until the pups are older (i.e. hip dypslasia, etc.). I would also recommend always visiting the breeder and meeting the sire/dam - their temperment is extremely important!
I wish you luck in your search! It's great that you're doing your homework early - most reputable breeders will have a waiting list - so start contacting them now! JMHO. Kristen |
There is a rescue contact for the Pittsburgh area. You may want to contact them to see if there are any breeders to steer clear of.
And, you never know, they may have the perfect buddy waiting there for you in the meantime! |

An Old English Sheepdog has only won Westminster two times in the history of the club-- once in 1914 and again in 1975. Neither of those dogs were named Beethoven. Could you be mistaken about what they said? I realize this is a very old thread but for anyone coming across this, please do your research. Facts like this are easy to check on the internet. Be wary of any breeder that makes big claims like this without showing you proof. |
Maybe the breeder meant Beethoven was a Best of Breed Winner at Westminster, not the winner of the whole ball of wax? |
Just did a quick search for Richey Kennel in PA, found one in Erie and they are on a Puppy Mill Awareness list dated from 2006. Not sure if this is the same one or not? I hope not... |

Neat thing, I met the owner of the 1975 BIS win at the recent Canadian specialty. DON'T shortchange yourself or your puppy by not doing thorough research. It pays for itself many times over in the quality of your life and your puppy's life. |
yes, it's the same. |
Hi guest, Could you pm me please ? My first OES was from Ritchey kennels and had the worst temperment issues ever !!! Also about 6 or 7 years ago she was still listed on the AKC website as a breeder I got him as a xmas present please use the OESCA breeder referal and save yourself alot of heartache or rescue a sheepie |
Mrs. Richey was a top of the line respected breeder of Old English Sheepdogs. Beethoven was not a Westminster winner and I am sure she never said that! Beethoven was a Champion with the temperament of a teddy bear! Mr. Richey owned the #1 OES I the country 2 years in a row. The Richey's are now 88 years old and retired from breeding. They never ran a puppy mill and if they were on such a list , some jealous person put them there. I have met many people who owned Richey sheepdogs and they all loved them! There was not a bad temperament EVER! I resent the fact that someone is running down the name of someone that they probably know nothing about! If they had temperament issues with a dog, then they most certainly were not raising it right! Nature/nurture theories work for animals too! |

I always get a laugh when someone picks an old post (in this case FOUR! years old) and goes on a rant. This forum seems to be the best (or worst) for that. I wonder why that is? |
Perhaps I went on a rant because this is the first I've seen this thread. I know Mr. and Mrs. Richey personally and resent the fact that someone is trashing them without knowing them. The Dog was Pickwick's Lord Beethoven. My baby would crawl all over Beethoven, stick his fingers up his nose, pull on his ears and tongue and the dog wouldn't move.. He was a beautiful dog, and his line of breeding is top of the line. I'll be willing to bet that the person trashing them never stepped foot in the kennel, or saw any of the dogs in the show ring. If you look at an older issue of the Old English Sheepdog of america club's magazine/booklet, you will find a picture of Mark, who was the #1 OES in the United State for 2 years in a row. So when this thread says check your facts.. maybe they should do it also. |

I grew up with one of their puppies and he was the best dog I have ever met. ( Not just a personal bias.) He behaved as well as any dog I have ever met and even protected me from another dog trying to attack me when I was very young. These people bred great dogs. |
