rescues which ship?

Does anyone know if there are any sheepie rescues which would ship a dog? I've been checking out petfinder again (it's weakness I know, and I'm just teasing myself for now), and there are so many sheepies out there that I know would make wonderful family members, and I'd love to bring one of them home, once we have a house. However, we don't have any rescues up here in MN for sheepies, and none of the big rescue societies that I've seen cover the MN area... So that leaves me with the question... Do any recues ship to folks that are out of state?

I know there's a disadvantage to not being able to meet your pal before they come home... that's a problem, but if someone at the rescue is good at matching up animals and personalities, is it an insurmountable problem? I really beleive in helping the pet overpopulation problem- both in promoting RESPONSIBLE breeding, and in adopting a homeless animals if possible. i also think an adult dog would work well with our family... Well let me know what you think...

Alot of the rescues do out of state adoptions! There would need to be a contact/volunteer with the Rescue that would be close by so they could do a home visit/inspection - but NEOESR in particular have placed dogs all across the country!

I just recently learned of a woman from MA who flew to Pheonix AR to rescue a dog from a shelter (she found her on Petfinder!).

I adopted Sydney sight unseen - never even saw a picture! :o
Hi...I saw this link the other day & thought it was a great effort...I'm sure there are many ground transports BUT this would sure be faster & less stressful for the pupper :D Maybe it will be helpful to someone/rescue group

Flying Paws is a non profit 501(c)3 corporation....

Flying Paws exists specifically to help animals in need, who are part of the rescue or family environment. Flying Paws is not a replacement for ground transportation but an additional resource when time or circumstances do not allow for ground transportation. Animals must be in a safe, secure environment before flight arrangements can be made. Flying Paws is an organization of pilots who volunteer their time and aircraft to assist animal rescue organizations in emergency air transportation of small animals in crisis situations
I found my sweet Hank through Texas OESR. They were able to arrange shipping via American Airlines. I did need to purchase a crate and since he was a large adult male, he needed the largest crate and could only be flown in a wide-body jet. This meant we had to drive from Stratford CT to Philadelphia (closest airport that accepted wide bodied jets and was open for cargo pickup on the weekend). If memory serves, crate was about $75.00 and airline was about $200.00 or so.

I did agree to take him sight unseen. I was a little leary about it, but it has worked out wonderfully. I made sure I asked any question about him that I could think of. I guess we really took a chance, but in this case the fit was perfect. He is a joy.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks guys! All the advice really helps.Luckily for us, we live within 20 minutes of minneapolis/st paul international airport, which flys in pretty much everything :) So if I find a pupper that needs a wide bodied jet, bring 'im on in :) I do really appreciate the support. I'm sure my sheepie is out there somewhere, just waiting for me to get that house!!!

Hi,

I thought I would chime in on this subject. May 2003, I rescued my OES via the airlines (Northwest) from Arkansas to Michigan and the cost was $220 one way. I rescued Mollie from a local shelter in Arkansas sight unseen. You have to have the vet sign a form confirming the dog's shots and the weather plays an important part when flying because the dog has to be in cargo and the tempature can not be below a certain degree.

Good luck to you and search for a OES.

Some OES rescues flat out will not place outside of their coverage area and others will. I think your best bet would be to email each rescue group and ask. A lot of the sheepdogs on Petfinder are "dually" covered by an individual OES Rescue group. I know that NEOESR, OESRNSE, Texas OES rescue have placed outside their areas and also have arranged transport. I have a friend in CA who adopted from Texas and we picked up "Bubba" at the SF airport when I lived in that area and another friend who flew to Boston from CA to pick up an NEOESR rescue....so the groups are out there and willing to work with you! Most have contacts in other states who will do the homechecks and interview (interrogate??! LOL!). Fill out some online adoption applications and see who can and who can't, who will and who won't! Different airlines have different stipulations and pricing depending on whether or not the dog is considered "cargo" or if accompanied by a ticket holder and all fly based on temperature restrictions. Some airlines are better and more careful than others about transporting our "precious cargo".
Best wishes for a sheepdog in your near future!! : )

Did you see this cutie? :D
