how do you folks feel

about changing a dog's name?

i have always named my dogs after my favorite athletes (gretzky, ripkin,).

since i am a rockies fan and my favorite player is now named troy tulowitzsky (colorado rockies shortstop), i have my heart set on "tulo".

you think the dog will mind?

I know that if a rescue dog is coming from a bad situation sometimes the rescue suggests that the name be changed to disassociate the dog with it's unpleasant past.

When we adopted Sadie we kept her name. But I think it's acceptable to change it if you wish. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
that's interesting... makes sense
I didn't have a choice. We didn't know Phoebe's original name. She adjusted to the change very quickly.
When I rescued Maggie, the prior owner named her Elle Mae - sounded too much like (maybe I better not complete that thought); anyway she was pedigreed but never registered so I named her Maggie (Dame Margaret Reginald) and she didn't object. Heck when its meal time or treat time she doesn't care what I call her. Most of the time it's "Sweetheart"

ROFLMAO!

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Belle has been Belle for ten years, but if I changed her name tomorrow, she probably wouldn't notice as long as I continued to feed her.

Dogs will basically respond to anything. I did not know what Pepsi's name had been when I rescued him and he immediately responded to Pepsi. About 5 days after we rescued him we found out his name had been Clyde. Too late by then.... he was already Pepsi and when I did call him Clyde he looked at me like I was crazy. The name also did not suit him as when I thought of the name Clyde I thought of a Clydesdale horse, which are HUGE and Pepsi is a small guy.

Rags' name was Kylie when we rescued her. So we called her Kylie Rags for a few days and dropped Kylie. Rags came from a bad situation and I didn't want her to have to hear that name again.... besides the fact that it didn't seem to suit her. We also found out that Kylie was not the name she had with her original owner it had been Kai.

Think about this.... the majority of dogs in shelters do not have names when they are adopted. They will respond to names you give them.

Also I have tons of nicknames for my dogs and they respond to each and every one.

I also feel it's better to start fresh with a new name for a new life, especially for a dog that has been rescued. :D
I only get rescues and initially I kept whatever name they had figuring that they didn't need any unnecessary other changes in their life. Which is why I once had a female OES who had to bear the name of "Puppy" all of her life.

I don't think that way anymore and have changed 5 of the last 6 of my dogs names. I try to find a name that has some of the same sounds in it as their old name, but it really doesn't matter. Bandit became Brandon. Dakota became Toby. I couldn't figure out any similar name for "Hobbs" so he just became Charlie. They all picked up their new name almost immediately and we never looked back.
My poor little foster boy will answer to anyhthing for attention and food
(I say poor little---he is fine and full of himself!)
I don't know his previous name but, I started calling him Pooh
This comes with Pooh Doo, Poohness, Pooh Diddy, Pooh Pants, and even Poodle
I didn't realize what a silly name it was until I was in the back yard calling him inside and in my nice happy, loud voice
"Come on Pooh Pooh"
Wow, did I quickly check for neighbors!!
That being said I have always changed my dogs names because, I like to give them a fresh start!

I changed Patch's name from Abigail because it just didn't fit her. Last year when I fostered a young female, I changed her name because she came from a deplorable situation and I wanted to separate her name from her past life. the new owners liked the name and kept it - Nellie. But, like the others have said here, Patch will answer to baby, honey, love - she just likes to be called. I would say name your dog whatever you like. This is Sheepie2, I am having trouble logging in.
I never really thought about it, but it makes sense to me that you would want to change the dog's name, especially if it came from undesirable circumstances. My pound puppies and roadside rejects have all been renamed, and, like someone else here said, they don't seem to care what we call them, as long as they get their share of love and attention.
My friend recently aquired a two year old mix Mastiff/ Boxer named Austin. I must stop here and say what an adorable dog he is. :hearts: Great personality, sweet little puggy face. ahhh The other day when I was over their kidsitting, the boy I was watching his name is Austin too. Anyway, the family want to change the dogs name to Spike, but each time I called him Spike...he didn't respond lol. So Austin twe legs and I decided that we would contiue to call him Austin, just add Dog on to his name so we knew who was who...so Austin Dog was born. lol

Violet was a rescue and I decided to keep her name because it fit her. China I bought from a breeder and her name was Pale Face....I changed that. :D
I wanted to change one of my rescue's names (Lacy). But with the kids, it was just too hard to coordinate, so I left it. My three year old couldn't wrap his brain around it.

Turns out it doesn't matter because she comes to "Lacy", "Lace", "Lazy Daisy", "Piggy-Piggy", "Suuuey!" and many other names. ;)

Point being, change it if you want - they'll come to whatever you get them used to. :D
I kept Corky & Shelby's names. I don't like either, but really hate the name Corky!
I felt they needed to keep part of their former loving owner (he passed away).
Plus they were 4 & 5 when I adopted them. Thought they were used to the names.
I named Fergus, he was a stray & had several temporary names, Montauk & Hootch among others.
I think Summer answers to Tilly, and Tilly answers to Summer just in case they might be missing something....
Simon the basset was adopted by me at age 6. His name really suits him. Plus, he actually listens and comes to it. If you have a basset that does that you would be nuts to change it! Why mess with a good thing!

Also, Simon came from a loving home. We had no bad memories to try and erase. He was healthy, UTD on all shots - (got his whole vet record since they got him as a pup), clean, perfect weight, had training and is well socialized. Then they had kids, and one was severely allergic. (Bassets are notoriously horrible if you have animal allergies). They placed Simon with rescue, because they wanted him to have a good home. What nice people!! :)
Pearl's name was orginally.....Jordan....which I really liked...but for some reason, Dino didn't.....so HE renamed her Pearl....

....................and we all know Heart's story....I named her Heart...BUT HE calls her Jelley.....
I call my twin girls Maisey all the time.

They don't even seem to mind it except, lately they have asked which parent named which kid...lol

I think I should get off the "-ey" theme before I lose any more of my marbles. Abbey, Lily and Maisey....What was I thinking?
