A dog of your dogs weight should be getting between 10 and 14 oz of food per day, if the dog is less active use the lower weight if he is active the higher weight, it is up to you how many times a day you feed the dog either once or twice, but remember to divide the weights advised. |
I go by the back of the bag (their guideline) as each dog food is different and can differ greatly on amount. Then if your dog maintains a healthy weight according to your vet, keep up that amount. If your dog gains or loses that skinny athletic frame ....you adjust. |
If you feed a premium product then the amounts I have given in the previos post are good guide lines, you will find amounts given on the back of the products vary and are normally extreamly well calculated to the advantage of manufacturer and not really in the interest of the dog, these amounts are calculated on the ratio 7- 10 gramms per kilo body weight. |

You're right, Stewart. They're usually very high, especially in lower quality foods. If I fed according to some that I've seen, Bear would be getting almost 7 cups of food and Clyde almost 6. At 130 pounds, Bear (Komondor) eats about 4 cups and at 103, Clyde (OES) eats just under 4. (They're eating Eagle Pack Holistic Select duck and oatmeal right now.) |
Whatever portion you decide to feed, it is important to try and feed twice a day instead of only once as smaller portions of food help prevent bloat in large dogs.
Our Frank who is 87 lbs. gets 4 cups a day. Rebecca at 80 lbs gets about 3. |
If I fed what the bag said my dogs would be 400 lbs!
Both Pepsi and Rags get a little less that 3 cups a days and they are perfect in weight. I was feeding more and was wondering why Pepsi was not losing weight. He was on a light formula of his food. I was overfeeding. As soon as I cut back, the weight came off and his big butt disappeared. He is nice and lean and perfect now. We have gone back to the regular formula of his food and we have had no problems maintaining his weight. |
