My cat peed on me :(

Does anyone know if dry cleaning a down comforter will get the cat pee out of it? Cat pee has seriously got to be one of the worst smelling things in this world. I just want to know if I should even spend the $$ or just toss the thing. There are 2 VERY large, soaked all the way through pee spots on our comforter.

Last night we were settling in to sleep and I had various cats gathered around me as usual. One did an awkward sort of squat that I thought was odd but I thought he was just trying to find a comfortable spot since I don't sleep the same way I did before being pregnant. A few minutes later I thought I smelled pee. I have a horrible nose and can't smell anything, so this was odd that I could! So I lift up the comforter and it seems heavier than usual. Ugh. Cat FULL ON peed on the comforter.

We are transitioning to a new litterbox so I don't know if he just doesn't like the new one and was mad and went on the bed (on me!) or if he doesn't like it and just held it as long as he could, or what.

8O ewwwwwwwww
can you have it professionally cleaned??????????
I would try washing those specific spots with soap/woolite & water before ditching it. I know it's down, but it shouldn't be a problem to submerge those specific areas and let it dry really well. If there is a lingering odor even after washing, I would treat it with something like Nature's Miracle.

But if you do end up ditching it, there are a lot of fabulous synthetic comforters out there that you can easily put in the washing machine.
I don't know how big it is, but I throw my down comforter in the wash all the time. The only issue is drying, I put it in the dryer with a clean sneaker and the sneaker beats the down back to being fluffy.

Maybe , if it's too big for your washer, you could take it to the laundry mat and wash it with some enzyme cleaner in the water.

Oh, we are twins again....
I also wash my down comforters in my machine at home. And dry with a tennis shoe or two.

It really does work, they get a good wash and come out fluffy like new.

I would rinse and pretreat, then wash it. :D

That's exactly what I used to do when I had a down comforter. You can actually get rid of cat pee with current detergents that have enzymatic clearners. You can also apply an enzymatic cleaner for pet urine directly on the comforter. I would wait til that dries and then toss it in the wash.

Cats peeing out of the litterbox is a good reason to take them to the Vet for a quick check. It often signals a urinary tract infection or some other prooblem.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a urinary tract problem. He's our cat that's had them before (and he's actually peed on the comforter before  ) but only once or twice and it was when he had a UTI and it was just a little drip or two here and there. This was a massive pee. I think the timing of switching out litterboxes is just a little too coincidental--and this cat is neurotic anyways. So we brought the old box back into the room next to the new one. If it happens again, though, he's going straight to the vet.

Hmmm, I had no idea you could wash down comforters...
I wash my down comforter at home, too, just like Ginny & Dawn & Val. So, I'd say, give that enzymatic cleaner a try & toss it in the wash. You've got nothing to lose.

I had a problem with Ainsley & Einstein when I tried switching them to an automatic litter box. They just flatly refused to use it. Eventually, I gave up and put the old one back in their room. They've finally forgiven me.

Tammy--when they refused, what did they do? Did they do their business elsewhere or just hold it?
Steph....hate to say this but someone has to...

thats just plain gross!
Hey, you should try using the urine removal recipe I posted on here. I've heard of people using it on furniture and matresses. I swear it's worked for me on the carpet! Its worth a shot and its cheap. It does take a couple of days to dry and see if its worked, but hey, worth a shot. Might have to treat it a couple of times. Good luck!

I know it is. I felt so dirty and violated afterwards too. I mean, we have a king size bed--why couldn't he have peed elsewhere on it...I'm sort of glad he did because at then I knew about it right away.
One of my sisters cats always peepd on her ex-husband shoes actuallt anything he left on the floor (while they were married) I still think the cat was the smart one and had him all fiqured out
I love my cats, but they are weird animals. I have two females and one is spraying my treadmill and the front door. I bought some spray that is supposed to make them think they already marked the area. It is a pheremone spray. One of them also pees all over the garage floor and poops on it. I have two litter boxes and I am thinking about buying new ones. I wish they had psyche neds for cats. :D I feel your pain!!!

Steph - they held it all day. I realized they were not using it, so I put the old one back out in hopes of transitioning them to the automatic one. But, it never worked. They just refused to go near the new one. I turned the old one around so that the opening faced the wall and they really had to work to get into it. But, they still got into it and were probably wondering what my problem was. I finally gave in and just got rid of the automatic one. So much for making my life a little easier.
I know this is a real problem for you, but the title of the thread made me laugh. I just picture this cat sauntering over to you with a smug look on it's face, it picks up it's hind leg, and pees on your foot. That's not what happened, but in my head it was funny.

Sorry about your bed though. I've never had a cat do that before. :P
Have you tried locking your cat up in a small laundry room or bathroom? It was hard for me to do b/c I hate her being locked up and how mad she would be when I checked on her (tons of shedding too which she does when mad or stressed) .............but after toughing it out for a week, her new litterbox had her scents and basically made her own. We stopped getting stains everywhere!!
Jo--that's what we've decided to do. Since Lenny peed on ME AGAIN last night (2 nights in a row), we decided drastic measures were in order. Took him to the guest bathroom and locked him in with the new litterbox. We didn't plug it in, but he used it during the night, so that was good. I guess we'll try just keeping him in there with it so he gets used to it.

The thing I don't understand, though, is that I had put the old litterbox right next to the new litterbox so they were both available to them, and he still peed on me again. I'm trying to figure that one out. I called the vet and they don't think it's a UTI and neither do I really, since usually when he has one it's hard for him to even dribble out pee and he was peeing oceans last night and the night before.

I hate having him confined though  He has the most pathetic cry...
I would take it to a laundry mat. I have a king size comforter and a heavy duty washer but the problem is the whole comforter never seems to get fully cleaned, or even fully wet. One of the giant machines does a better job and you won 't risk ruining your own machine.

Could be a reaction to your hormones. My animals acted really weird when I was pregnant. Harley (GSD) ate a full size bed. Shredded the pillows, comforter destroyed and ripped the stuffing out of the mattress and tore apart the box spring. Animals can be really weird like that. He never did anything like that before I was pregnant or after I had Hayley.

I do feel your pain about the bed. I had a very sick cat named Murray years ago who would pee on my bed every day!! Luckily I had one of those water beds that had a mattress like cover and I could easily soak it with Nature's miracle. I also had to confine him, unfortunately that did not help him as he would do it again as soon as I let him out of the bathroom. But he was a very sick kitty his whole life. I also tried behavioral medication for Murray, as the Vet suggested it may have been behavioral. No luck with this.... but I feel Murray did it because he was sick and this was his way of telling me, "Hey Mommy, I don't feel good!"
I hope this passes and soon! I would ask your Vet if they think this could be related to your pregnancy. Maybe your hormones are causing him to go haywire. You could always try behavioral meds to see if that helps.
I just don't know what to do with him. He's been in the bathroom since Friday night (we switched him to our master bedroom on Sunday, and added all the other cats with him), and this morning I was blow drying my hair and my toe bumped into his cat bed and I thought it felt damp. It didn't look wet, though. But I picked it up and it reeked of cat pee. I don't think he did a full pee on it, but it def. smells of cat pee.
Oh no... I hope he's just being stubborn and not sick.

I know how terrrrrrrrible it is to have a cat who isn't peeing in the right place, so.............

thank God it's not me.
JUST KIDDING!! :P
I'm really sorry but Muh Hah Hah!!!! That title did me in!

I hope you find a solution soon and that nothing is wrong. If it helps, your thread made me fell better. We're sending some good cat vibes your way, with a tiny giggle to accompany them!
Well, Mr. Pee struck again last night. At least it was on my husband and not me this time.
