Reintroducing foreign pedigrees into our own

I've been following the threads on showing with tail/docked tail and wondered how important it is, in the hierarchy of improving the standard, to increase our gene pool by reintroducing foreign pedigrees to the American ones?

Depends on what you want to introduce. Just because the pedigree is foreign doesn't mean you are going to get different dogs back in the history. Everybody can be traced back to the same few dogs if you try hard enough.
While I do think that we need to widen our vision when thinking about who to breed to, I don't think that importing semen or a bitch for the sake of importing is going to automatically widen the gene pool. You could successfully widen the gene pool just by broadening your horizons and going two states over.

Pedigree research is extremely interesting and exhausting at the same time. It is really amazing and sad just how entrenched everyone is becoming. When you see the same dogs multiple times in a "good" pedigree it starts to get scary.
One thing that I was doing to try and learn more is to think of it like a fantasy baseball team. You look at videos and see what you like about some dogs or you physically go over a dog and see what you like and then you think about who you would breed them with based on what you like about those dogs. Then you put their pedigrees together and see what you get. A lot of the time, you'll get similar pedigrees or all the dogs you like will go right back to the exact same line or specific dog. (It makes it easy to see how people have come to breed to "favorites" and all.)

You don't do that just for the sake of doing that. You typically have a more specific reason. And thanks to modern technology, you can do that in most cases without introducing the actual dog ;-)

And it tends to go more the other way. One Northern European bitch was artifically inseminated by an American dog who himself was at Westminster yesterday, while another will be AI'd by the sire of another of the participants today or tomorrow. What does it mean if a bunch of nice European bitches are all bred to the same five-six American males, usually widely used here as well? Gene pool actually shrinks.

In countries where they don't permit AI, you can always ship (fly) the bitch to the male and fly her back, hopefully pregnant.

Now, if you own the American studdog and you want to import offsping of your dog back, and you want to show them, you have to have them docked at an older age. Someone is doing that this week. I know. Makes me a little ill too.
