Have to share a funny/heartwarming story with you guys. For those of you that are familiar with Panda, my rescue from Hong Kong in this story you'll know what I'm talking about. For the newcomers - Panda was supposed to possibly have a lot of aggression issues which fortunately most haven't panned out. Whew! BUT>>>>>>> I say But ...he DOES have issues with scissors and grooming tools. It took weeks to build his trust that I can now brush him without constantly looking at his face for cues. The quivering lip is the first sign that he's had enough...at first it was the first few seconds I touched his head...now it's not a problem but it took lots of patience and time. Now I can brush his entire body but this was a long process to even get that far. One stroke of the brush...good boy...treat....leave it for the next day...two strokes you get the idea..:O) His hair was growing back nicely after being shaved just before he flew to Canada but he did develope a mat under his neck due to having spent some time this summer swimming in the ocean. I met this wonderful lady at the dog park whom was taking a course on how to be a groomer and she begged to take Panda into her shop. She knew his history and even came over to my house several times to spend time alone with Panda. She was one of his favorite people too. Although I did insist that she muzzle him during the grooming as a precaution...she kept saying oh I'll have no problem - he loves me. Ummm he loves me too but I know him enough to never have attempted as of yet to take grooming tools to him just a brush. Well she picks him up that morning and with arrangements from her instructor - Panda will be the star at the shop that morning as he will have the attention of 5 groomers. I did highly suggest that he not be stressed and perhaps Chris my friend from the dog park be the only one doing the majority of the work. Alas she returns him to me....fully shaved again, with the exception of a Shnauzer Beard ( well she's still learning) as it was too difficult to brush out his now growing coat. Ohmygawd she says...you were right!!!! I never seen Panda like that!!! He snarled and my instructor said he was the most aggressive dog she's seen getting groomed!!! None of the other students even wanted to get near him!!! She stayed in the shop long after her class was over to finish the job. She now has seen that side of Panda which I am always cautious about as I have never attempted it myself! Such a kind soul she is ...just a few days ago she asked if Panda could visit her at her house for a few hours. I returned to pick him up and there he was nicely brushed and his Beard clipped! She doesn't graduate from her course for another three weeks but she's definately a keeper!!!!! She's going to be my lifetime groomer!!! It's not the fact that so far I haven't been charged with anything it's that she truly loves Panda and has been willing to go the extra mile as he is so traumatized regarding hoses and grooming tools. What a wonderful woman she is!!! |
