Welcome from Ontario, Canada!!
I, too can't wait to see some pictures! I am thrilled that you adopted an OES, and one who is deaf, to boot! Please let us know how training is going, and of course we'd love to hear all your "new puppy at home" stories! |
Welcome from the Sunshine State!
Sprocket, very cool name! Sheepies are the best! |
Just in case you haven't found these resources-
The Deaf Dog Education Action Fund http://www.deafdogs.org . Book- "Living With A Deaf Dog" by Susan Cope-Becker ASL University website at http://www.lifeprint.com if you would like some different signs to use... you can make up your own too. Remember that there is no "recall" for a deaf dog so a fenced yard is usually mandatory. If he sees something and goes after it, you have no way to get his attention- unless you're using a vibrating collar- but if the dog wants what it sees more, he may refuse to come back. Thanks for giving this extra special sheepie a chance! |

CONGRATULATIONS from the Bluegrass! Enjoy your wonderful Sproket for years and years to come - and thank you for rescuing an OES in need. |
Congratulations! That's awesome.
The first OES I ever knew was deaf, his name was Livingston. He was my fathers dog when I was was very young - he was great. Enjoy your new friend - Sheepdogs rule! |
Congratulations and welcome to the list!!
Thank you for sharing that you adopted him---my sister in law called me Friday night from Ohio to ask me if she needed to go pick him up! I am so happy he found his furever home! I saw his picture on the humane society's website---he is a cutie!!! (did he have a wound on his eye or is that just the picture?) We have Kismet a deaf OES who is every bit as stubborn as a hearing sheepie! Wait until you try to get him to do something and he looks away so you can't signal him!!! They are a BLAST! You have come to the right place for advice....the folks are great here Enjoy your new baby! Kathy |
Congratulations and welcome from St. Louis!!!
There are a few people on the forum who have deaf OES's so you can count on alot of support here. We adopted Pearl from the Humane Society here in St. Louis...and I felt the same way ...I couldn't leave the building without her!!!! The best thing I ever did!!!! (Can't wait to see Sprocket's pics!!!!) |
"I saw his picture on the humane society's website---he is a cutie!!! (did he have a wound on his eye or is that just the picture?) " it looks like he had an infection.. but it's cleared up. there are some tear stains on the fur around that one eye. but we're working on cleaning that up |
Hi Sprocket and uprights!! Welcome. We've had Ralph about 6 months now and received a ton of great advice here. Don't be afraid to ask any question.

And why would a deaf sheepdog be anything but a real sheepdog? <snicker> One of the local foster homes has a deaf OES of her own and she was just telling the story about how her guys conned her out of bed at 2 a.m. and when she tried to crawl back into bed her deaf boy was completely ignoring her signing to him to get off the bed. It's -8F here right now and she evidently has a heated blanket, so who can blame him? Good luck with Sprocket (love the name!!) and since there are a number of people on here with deaf OES, hopefully they can share what they've learned from living with their dogs. Kristine |
Welcome from Minnesota!
And congratulations on Sprocket's adoption! SheepieBoss wrote: Cute name, though he will never hear it!
Sprocket will "hear" his name just like any other "sign" you teach him. Like others with deaf dogs have said, prepare for his "selective hearing". After all, he's an OES! It's strange, once you've lived and loved a deaf dog, you often forget they are deaf. They don't act any differently and around here all our dogs know "sign" and "hand signals". No one would ever guess our Gertie is deaf unless we tell them. Come to think of it, the only things I can think of off-hand that we do differently for Gertie are: -She wears a martingale collar on walks for her protection so she can NOT slip her lead (loved the martingale so much we got them for all our dogs for walks) -She has a special tag that states: DEAF DOG -- REWARD -We always brush by her when we leave a room so can "hear" us leave and has the choice of whether to follow or not -We wave "good-bye" to her when we leave the house so she knows we are going and won't be back for a while. .. I'm sure if I thought hard enough there would be other things, but they become so second nature ... Donner's Mom (Kathy), what am I forgetting? Deaf OES are just as nutty as any other OES and the people who love them! Oh! And just wait for the folks who'll ask you if your deaf dog barks! |
Congrats and welcome! Sprocket is a beautiful boy. We also have a deaf sheepie, Oscar, who is now almost four years old. Jaci (6Girls) mentioned a book called Living With a Deaf Dog by Susan Cope Becker, and it was my Bible when we brought Oscar home. It is a tiny little book but full of very important information.
As nahakala mentioned, deaf dogs are not much different than hearing ones, but we do make a few adjustments for them. Oscar is trained not to exit an open door to the outside, unless given a sign, and he is trained to do the same with an open car door. Cars are Enemy #1 for deaf dogs, so Oscar is NEVER off leash outside unless he is in a completely fenced in area. You might want to find a trainer in your area who has worked with deaf dogs, as doing obedience training is a great bonding experience, and will tire Sprocket out mentally and physically. Oh, and don't be surprised if you start signing to all of your friend's dogs. And if Sprocket sleeps in your bedroom at night, you might want to invest in a few night lights. (My hubby and I discovered this fact as we lay in bed in complete darkness, listening to Oscar running around the room, and army crawling under our bed, because he couldn't see us signing "No!" and "Down". ) If you have any questions, you know where to find us! Laurie and Oscar |
He's adorable! And he looks a lot like my Pirate (who recently got a similar hair cut). Is his full name Spacely Sprocket? Congrats to all of you! And Welcome! |
My favorite show when I was a kid was Fraggle Rock. There was a sheep dog named sprocket on that show. I LOVED sprocket. he was adorable. So i couldnt not name my sheep dog sprocket |

I must confess----when I come home for lunch, I sneak in trying not to wake Kissy so, I can fix her lunch without "The Kissy Song and Dance" (she loves to eat) This way she eats as soon as I wake her and she thinks I made her breakfast in bed! |

That is probably the cutest story i have ever heard - what a great relationship you all have. Every once in a while I'll try to sneak by Patch so she doesn't have to get up to see where I am going in the house - forget it, she can hear a fly buzz a mile away. |
Thank you for rescuing that beautiful boy Welcome fro PA |
doggie breakfast in bed is spoiled..I don't care who u are....
ok i do it too. |
Sprocket is a big, handsome dog for sure. I'm sure you won't regret getting him. If you ever consider getting a second dog, don't let his deafness stop you. I would suggest a dog of the opposite sex, though.
I had a deaf OES a long time ago, a female, who came to depend upon my male for things she couldn't hear. When walking they were always side-to-side, with her bumping against his shoulder. I think she had learned to be alerted to things that might surprise her by his actions or his state of tension, which she could sense. You might also want to keep him in short coat or at least trim the hair over his eyes so that he has unimpaired eyesight. My deaf girl had blue eyes too, as have other deaf OES I have come across. I think that there may be a recessive genetic linkage between congenital deafness and blue-eyes in OES. |
Welcome Sprocket and family!!! What a handsome boy! |

"The Kissy Song and Dance" (she loves to eat) This way she eats as soon as I wake her and she thinks I made her breakfast in bed! But you know Gert, she'd think I was leaving her out and would be soo miffed. Besides, Gertie must be able to smell the food dispenser being opened ... she's the first one there at meal time. (funny how those other senses kick in to compensate) Or is it simply that huge honkin' clown nose of hers? (Shhhh! Gertie can't help she looks more like a dog than a bitch) Perhaps when Grrrtie is all grown up, like her friend Kissy ... ah, never mind ... ** Back to SPROCKET! It's good to hear his eye is better. He is looking very handsome and happy in his new home! A new name for his new start in life. |
Greetings from Canada to Sprocket and his family. Glad you joined us at the forum!

Hi, my name is Sherry and I have a 5 year old deaf sheepie her name is Macy. People think we are nuts, we speak to her like she can hear us. She is so loving. She does like to be able to see us at all times, she is always under foot. She will follow us everywhere. I believe it is because she can't hear us. We always keep her on a lead, because I'm afraid she'll see something and take off, then we couldn't call her. She does know how to come, sit, and lay down SOMETIMES with hand signals. We taught her with treats. Lots of them. You will love your little boy. He will be fine. Macy will bark at us if she needs to go out, and tip her bowl over if she wants food or water. They become very inventive. When we take her leash off the hook she goes nuts, she loves car rides. She just lays down and sleeps. If we stop for food she will lean into us with her pretty blue eye and brown one and kiss us in hopes of some goodies!! She doesn't care to be brushed. Needless to say oour vet has a groomer that shaves her every once in a while. Hope to here how your boy is doing. Sherry |
Welcome sherry and Macy! How about posting some pictures of your girl? |
I can tell you Macy looks just like Sprocket, except she has 1 brown eye. Her markings are almost identical!! It is amazing. I am not computer savy, but my girls are coming home in April and I will have them post pictures then. Thanks for asking. Sherry |
So, here's an update on Sprocket:
We've had our challenges with him (separation anxiety) Slowly but surely he is adjusting. We've already seen vast improvement... when we first brought him home he couldnt stand to be alone (even for a second), now as soon as we wake up in the morning he runs to the door and goes outside all by himself! Before, he wouldnt go potty until we walked outside with him. He's very sweet, and VERY intelligent. He loves to be with us at all times. But he is slowly becoming more independant. I can sit in a chair at the back of the living room, and he will sit on the couch by himself. So, we think his separation anxiety is getting better. We love everything about him! He is the sweetest boy. He is also learning lots of hand signals. So, all in all, I would totally recommend anyone to rescue a deaf dog.... they can be challenging but will change your life for the better |
That is awesome news!!!!
Thanks for the update---- Kathy |
Great update! |
Congradulations on Sprocket!! I have a deaf sheepie her name is Macy, she is the light of my life!!! I would choose another deaf sheepie any day. You will Love Sprocket to death!! I know Macy is very attached to me she doesn't leave my side and likes to be under my feet all day. When I'm working she is with my Mom. I think because they can't hear they like to see you all the time. Best of Luck!! Sherry |
