Here's a brief bio of the book and the movie that followed. It explains it better than I am. http://www.oliversacks.com/awake.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awakenings Marianne It's a moving and powerful story and I highly recommend it's worth the read or watching the vid. |

I have seen this movie many times. Very powerful, yet very sad when the medication no longer helped. |
One of my favorites..Robin Williams as the doctor. Very moving. |
It's a very sad movie. |
I saw it as few years ago.....I wasn't aware that it was based on a true story until after the movie.
Very sad and moving for sure. Robert De Niro is awesome, as usual...Wasn't he the patient in it? |
Oops you're probably right and I think it must have been Robin Williams that played the doctor.
Awesome movie and I was thinking about it this week as I experienced something that reminded me of it. I felt I was witnessing a miracle. No drugs of any kind were involved and all those that saw it occurring are at a loss to explain what caused it. Little fellow who is autistic (one of my students). His form of autism is Aspergers which is high functioning autism, very bright but lacks any social skills and often is unaware of what is going on around him. Children with autism are often said to live in their own world. This little fellow once suprised me by comparing my world and his world last year. It took aprox a year for him to speak to me although we see each other on a daily basis. Wed, Thursday and Friday something amazing happened! He was so fully aware of everything, spoke to all those around him , including strangers to our school ,which were the workman doing seismic upgrade on the building. He told jokes, laughed, played tag with other kids....He stood up in front of the staff room of people and read a story from a book! Unheard of previously! He's known these children for years and never had conversations with them, nor played with them. I've known him for years and never seen him so "aware". His mom and dad were so happy and dad even had a chance to take him to see the Interactive show , Walking with Dinosaurs, which he said he loved. His parents were thrilled as they were able to walk into a sold out show in a stadium that fits aprox 60,000 people. His mom called me on Sunday and it was so heartwarming hear her tell me about it. Normally he would have a meltdown just walking into a room with strangers. So what happened to make him so aware in those three days? His food was exactly the same (children with autism have food issues and have been known to eat the exact thing for years on end). Nothing changed that any of us can think of in his diet, sleep or anything else. I'm crossing my fingers that I will see the same awareness on Monday when school returns. I'm left in awe as I felt I witnessed a miracle. Marianne |
